Mini Trip Report/First Royal

Just got back from Vegas after a stay from May 29 to June 2. Stayed
at the Boulder Station one, LV Hilton two nights (one free) and the
Orleans two nights for free.

I wound up getting my first Royal! Hooray! I got it at the Main
Street Station. I have been playing recreationally since 1999 and
started playing according to strategy since 2000.

My problem was I never had a serious bank roll and I should play
nickel video poker with my meager bank roll of usually around $400
but I usually play quarter video poker. I kind of realized this a
couple of years ago but my fear was that my first royal would be on
a nickel machine after years of trying on quarter machines.

I initially went to MSS on Tuesday to finally play for their scratch
card promotion that I've heard about and also play for their 20x
odds craps. I started playing on the quarter 9/6 JOB machines and
after a half hour got a four of kind to get the scratch card. There
was a gentleman next to me that had just a Royal on the $10/7 DB
machine and was waiting for his payout so I got my scratch card
right away and won $2. I then went to play at their craps table and
lost a $100 pretty quickly.

My wife and I then decided to go to Lunch at the Micro Brew. It was
a pretty good lunch. The place reminded me of a regular joint you
would find here in the Midwest. My wife initially didn't want to go
to down town. We have been to Vegas five times and this was only
our second trip downtown. I told her the MSS was a nice place and
after some reluctance she agreed to go. She really liked it and
after lunch she wanted to see their gift shop.

I would have left if she wanted but since she was going to shop I
decided that I would play their peculiar looking "Treasure Chest"
bonus VP quarter machines. These machines had 8/5 JOB paytables but
advertised that once you got a four of a kind you picked a "treasure
chest" that would be worth anywhere from $35 (instead of the normal
$31.25) to $1199. I know this isn't full pay but I was intrigued
and decided to play. I'm always a sucker for these gimmick VP
machines.

I put in a $20 and after a half hour of play didn't get a four of
kind. I decided to put in another $10 to try to get this goofy four
of a kind bonus. My wife after looking at the gift shop decided to
play some other VP machines. I kept playing on the $10 and kept
looking for the four of kind and not think about the Royal like a
normally do on a VP machine. I was playing fast, faster than I
normally play to get this 4 of a kind. Then I came across an
Ace/King of hearts and held them and was dealt the 10, Jack, Queen
of hearts for the Royal!

What a thrill and a shock because I wasn't even thinking about the
royal. I called my wife over and the slot attendant allowed us to
take a picture. Funny thing was I always watched people get
jackpots at casinos and was always amazed when they kept playing the
same machine. In my case I still had 50 credits on that "Treasure
Chest" bonus game and still wanted that four of kind to see what
would happen. I ended up playing the 50 credits out in 20 minutes
and still didn't see the four of kind. I then left about $1000
richer.

I ended up taking about $950 home in net profit from the trip. I
had some other good successes: three four of kinds in quarter
Pick'em at the LV Hilton including two within five hands, and four
Aces in the quarter 10/7 DB game at the Orleans. I also got a
Straight Flush at a nickel 9/7 DB at the Orleans which was only my
second Straight Flush ever.

Low lights included throwing a $100 in the $1 Pick'em at the Hilton
and watching it evaporate in less than 10 minutes and losing $160 at
quarter and 50 cent Bonus Poker at the Orleans without hitting a
four of kind.

Here is my question for the group: Is "Treasure Chest Bonus" a
legitimate VP machine? Does it deal from a 52 card deck? I've
never seen these machines anywhere else and the seemed to be quite
old being that their graphics seemed to have faded quite a bit.

I wish I had new machines or inventories to report but don't. I can
only confirm that the Boulder Station, LV Hilton and Orleans
inventories listed are correct. Anyway it was a great trip. Loved
the Royal and loved the quarter picke'em at the Hilton. What a
great game to rack up points.

Thanks

Congrats on the Royal !
My first royal too was a few years in the making. Then I hit my second royal two months later.
Note: Pick-em is great for racking up points but don't expect the Royal but one in 350,000 hands.

The Treasure Chest machines you played at MSS are
absolutely "legitimate" VP machines and play with a 52
card deck. However you will ONLY find them at downtown
BOYD properties(Fremont,Cal and MSS) as they are
proprietary Boyd Games.

After many years of playing them and keeping very
good records I have figured out that the average four
of a kind payout on these machines is about 168 coins.
WinPoker says this to be 99.33%.And just a side note,
I am NOT including the TWO 5000($1) coin Treasure
Chests I have picked. If I did the average would be
quite a bit higher and the game would be over 100%.

The video poker purists don't like this game because
they cannot figure out an exact payback percentage.
I myself love the game and think the Treasure Chest
option when hitting a four of a kind adds excitement
and makes the game much more fun.

Congrats on your first royal and I hope you hit many
more!

Treasure Chest machines can also be found at Sam's Town, another Boyd
property.

I have recorded 98 quads on these machines. 97 of them averaged
approx 185 coins. I did NOT include #98 which was for $1199
Based on my numbers, the progressive can be played below $1500 for a
101.5% advantage, including points and scratch cards.

Wow, I didn't know "Treasure Chest" had a following. I'll have to
try them again. I've also been known to throw a $20
into "Shockwave" VP and "Big House" VP. I'm sure some of the VP
gurus wouldn't approve.

Good report and congrats on the 1st royal, may you get many more. I
am also a sucker for the Treasure Chest VP, love the excitement of
hitting a jackpot when we get 4 of a kind. On our last visit to LV
staying at the Fremont, Lucky Lucy hit a royal on a TC machine.

Speaking of Lucky Lucy and royal flushes, she continues to live up to
her nickname and has hit 5 royals in the past 6 weeks (and 1 for me).
The last one was on a Pick'em a couple days ago, only the second one
I have ever witnessed.
