Saturday
We headed to Ameristar casino for the evening. Our casino host had
made arrangements for tickets to see Bob Newhart and reserved a room
for the night in the hotel so we didn't have to drive home after the
show. We also had reservations for Bugatti's, their better restaurant.
We checked into the hotel first thing and was pleasantly surprised at
the room. The hotel rooms have recently been renovated and look
great. Amenities included a 42 inch, flat panel, high definition TV.
But we didn't hang around the room to watch TV, more interesting
stuff to do.
The place was packed when we arrived. We hardly ever go out on
weekends and now I remember why. However, we got right in at the
restaurant and our show tickets were ready for pickup.
The food and service in Bugatti's was excellent and we were out in
plenty of time to make the show. Our seats were front center about 7
rows back, pretty decent especially considering the tickets were
complementary.
The show started with a really good band playing Duke Ellington and
Glen Miller standards. I wouldn't call the band the highlight of the
show but it ranked pretty high. Newhart did about an hour of standup
comedy, the jokes and routines about what we expected. His comedy is
fairly low key, somewhat subtle, and very funny. We greatly enjoyed
both him and the band.
After the show we hit the casino for a little gaming before turning
in. The very first hand I played, I hit a royal flush. That never
happened before (and probably will never happen again). Anyway, a
great way to end up an excellent evening. We didn't stay in the casino
very long, too many people, too much smoke.
Sunday morning we went to the brunch in the buffet where we chowed
down on breakfast stuff -- omelet, etc. -- and fresh fruit. Did a
little more gaming and decided to hit the road for home. But then
discovered the Star Club (of which Luck Lucy is a member) also had a
breakfast spread along with other food. So we went in for a snack of
coffee and more fresh fruit.
We still had food coupons so went by the diner and ordered takeout,
enough for a couple more meals at home.
So that's our weekend, didn't cost us a cent (other than gas), and
came home with our pockets full of casino money to boot. Life is good.
