Mickey, You Played In Gardena?

I just read where you said you saw someone daily in Gardena. I used to play there daily also, and became a house player. Played mostly at the Horseshoe. Boy we must have known the same people. Bet we even know each other. I was playing down there from about 1976-1984.

What games did you play? I started playing draw and then shifted to lowball.

That was my comment you were reading. And I was mentioning that Robert Turner used to be at the Horseshoe, probably late 80s, I believe he organized a pot limit Omaha. It had to be late 80s, now that I think of it, because they didn't spread board games until either 86 or 87. Not sure what year they leveled the Horseshoe, but that was my hang out. I grew up in those card rooms. That was my education.

I was in Gardena in 1977 but didn't play any poker. The one thing I noticed there was you could rent a hotel room for three hours. I wonder what that was about. Just kidding.

The one incident I remember Robert Turner for was at the 2004 WSOP at the Horseshoe/Vegas. The $2000 Omaha 8 tournament was going. I was in a 10/20 Omaha 8 game downstairs but would take breaks and go up and railbird the tournament. Eventually it got down to the final table. Robert Turner was there along with Eric Seidel and Annie Duke.

I was back downstairs in the Omaha 8 game when someone came by and said Annie won the bracelet. The guy sitting next to me went into a tirade about Duke and Turner to the gist that Annie wouldn't have won it if she had been a man.

I asked him what happened. He said that with about 50 players left Duke was in a hand with Turner. By the river Duke was down to her last few chips and was holding third nut low with third nut high. She checked and Turner checked behind saying "I can't take a lady's last few chips." Turner was holding nut-nut. This was a rules violation but they got away with it.

"You say that?" I asked
"Hell yeah" he said. "I was sitting at the table. She knocked me out 20th."

I wonder if any of you older-timers recall about 20 years ago - The Other Rat Pack, which would be my Dad Pat Maxwell, along with Phil Crosby (Bings son), Frank Sinatra (all 3 have passed) and Buck Bailey, Monroe Powell would often be along with them and a few other ? Those were Real Vegas days ! My Dad sent me here when I was 22 (along with chaperones, that I carefully alluded..hehe)..It was a such a 'wonder-world' in those days & I still love the city yet, something (probably those guys & my Dad) seems to be missing.

Boy could I tell you stories about those 3 hour rentals at those motels. Actually I think it was 2 hours. Just about the time I got divorced, I was wearing out the mattresses there.
