MGM City Center and Aria--VPO

(that's: Very Personal Opinion.) just back from las vegas. took
an afternoon to check out aria and city center. my reactions:

ok. we all knew that the vp at aria sucks. unfortunately, so does
aria's sombre interior, with a dark brown palette and absolutely
no wow factor. i couldn't wait to get out of there--depressing. i
was also extremely underwhelmed by city center's pedestrian flow
(there isn't any), signage (there isn't any)--put those two
characteristics together and you can walk around for quite a
while without getting anywhere--architecture (boring glass and
concrete high-rises, which could have been built at the nadir of
architecture in the '60s, except the building are curved), facing
material (basically concrete and cheap metal sheeting), huge
blank open spaces with no character whatsoever
(industrial-institutional?). yes, as they claim, they have really
changed las vegas: they have changed it from fun to vulgar; they
have effectively bisected lv boulevard north and south, cutting
off one from the other; they have created a monstrosity skyline
(couldn't they at least have looked at what's going on
architecturally in dubai?); they have cut off the winter sun for
hours of the day at pool areas like paris and bellagio. it is
nothing but a testament to men's greed and megalomania.

my reaction may be somewhat premature in that the interiors and
spaces may eventually be planted or decorated; but nothing will
soften aria's interior or city center's architectural profile.
the only thing i saw worth celebrating was the henry moore
sculpture, a note of wonder plunked down inexplicably in a
completely sterile environment.

and perhaps someone can time how long it would take to walk from
an end-of-hall room in aria to the bellagio conservatory. i
shudder to think.

sorry for this long-winded report, but after bellagio and wynn, i
was sooooooo disappointed--and dispirited.

I agree completely. The parking garage entrance is an accident waiting to
happen. The casino is a dark cave/maze with glowing monitors and poor
layout. The volume on some of the slots is set to "stun." Made me want to
get out of the building ASAP. I really hate that the development was
allowed to hijack the sidewalk on the west side of LV Blvd in the same way
that Harrah's did between Harrah's and IP. Perhaps the rooms make up for
the disappointment on the casino floor, but then people wouldn't want to
leave the room! Thumbs down on Aria.

Sorry, but I have to disagree.

After visiting Aria on opening night, I really like the whole vibe and architectural ambience of Aria and City Centre. It feels very modern and urban to me, which is something I feel, as a resident, is very lacking in this town.

And, like it or not, I believe that we'll see more and more like it in Las Vegas once the economy turns around. Remember, plans for Echelon didn't look much different in terms of aesthetics. I can't wait to see more of it!

Fortunately for you, there is still something for everyone in this town, and you can stay at the Wynn and not even lay eyes on City Centre, if that's your preference.

Cheers.

Hi,
I just got back from Aria and I'll confirm what others have said. I couldn't find and FP VP under $5. They did have some $1 progressives that were 8/5 and at $6500+. I found the casino to be very dark and not very appealing.

Personally, we didn't think to much of it. Huge steel structures, way overpriced shopping. We were glad that we changed our New Years reservations to NYNY.

I don't know much about architecture, parking garages or sidewalks.

But I do know a little something about video poker.

And what I know is that Aria missed out on a golden opportunity to actually change the image of the Strip as a VP wasteland.

Instead, our opening night stay was greeted by far less VP selection and higher prices than other nearby properties. Instead of saying "wow" and seeing many of the newest VP games we felt almost bored. So our stay ended up being a typical monotonous $5 single line 9/6 Jacks session where I ended up slightly ahead at checkout but not the least bit entertained.

Frankly, I anticipated the VP mix that Wynn/Encore or Venetian had when thay first opened. And the rooms at those three properties are older but superior to the one we had at Aria. I will admit the food was good, and the perpetual line at Jean Phillippe was worth the wait for fine dessert and coffee.

An ARIA Super Bowl weekend invitation in a giant box arrived today. Sorry, but there's just no enthusiasm to return any time soon, if at all.

I was there a couple of days ago. Some guy hit for $9100 playing 6-5-175 Jacks, and I was thinking, is that even 100%? After doing some quick calculations, I'm guessing 100.4.

Progressive meters appear to be .4 all around, but I only looked at a few of them. The dollar stuff may be .5%.

Nice to hear you and NYNY kissed and made up. Just make sure you don't get overcomped lol.

We went there last week after parking in the Bellagio parking garage. I was surprised how far it was to walk from that garage to the Aria casino (even taking the tram). And the casino was way too dark the day we were there. A friend with us has very weak vision and could barely make out anything inside the casino ... we had read there where skylights ... where were they? But its hard not to be impressed by the huge scale of everything as you walk from space to space. Later, after sunset, I walked alone back to Bellagio to get my car and drove to the Aria valet area on the second level. As I left, knowing I needed to go down one level, I drove down the nearest ramp ... wrong! That is the entry to the valet lot. Backing up, I circled around and exited down the next down ramp. Wrong again! That left me going west away from the strip. I still don't know if there is a way to exit Aria and go east. The signage was poor I thought.

I wanted to stop off to see Aria, so as I was headed home last week driving south on the Strip, I went into the Aria self-parking lot. After some congestion outside - not real bad - I finally got to the true congestion, inside the parking garage. Instead of letting you drive to any level you want to look for parking, like most casinos do (so you can skip the crowded first levels & go farther down), they seem to have built it as a maze so that every car has to wind down every aisle of every level, until (hopefully) finally finding something. (Unless you want to go the wrong way against the arrow.) You can imagine how frustrating that was, especially since every other parking spot is kept empty, I guess to make it easier to get in and out of cars. So it looks like there's plenty of parking available, only the level is full. After winding through a few levels, I gave up & exited. Never did see the casino. Next time I'll park at the Monte Carlo, and walk over.

These days I only deal with a regional MGM host. There are never any issues and I know exactly what is comped up front. A last minute $1000 Free Play offer from NYNY is why I made the change from Aria.

We always liked the comfortable feel of NYNY and the live band playing classic rock. That has been replaced by a high limit lounge and a huge center bar blasting hip hop music throughout the Casino.
