Mega-tsunami Danger to US

My hope is the Asian tsunami disaster will draw attention to a danger
of even greater magnitude to the eastern seaboard of the US. Not
many people are aware of this danger. The island of La Palma, one of
the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, is an active volcano that
is splitting into two parts. Someday the western part will slide
into the ocean creating a "mega" tsunami that will swamp the entire
east coast. This will happen, but no one can predict when. The BBC
had a program several years ago on this danger. If you want further

I would like to see a project funded to investigate ways to stabilize
this volcano. One idea is to drain the groundwater stored inside the
volcano because it may be facilitating the splitting process.

I read the article with interest and found that the scientists concluded,
"In other words, any time in the next few thousand years a huge section of
southern La Palma, weighing 500 thousand million homes, will fall into the
Atlantic ocean." Me thinks we should put our combined efforts into solving
the social security problem over the next 20 years or so. Then perhaps, we
will have a few thousand years left to worry about La Palma falling into the
ocean.

If the polar ice caps melt the sea level will increase a couple
hundred feet. Since the highest place in Florida is, like, 330 feet
above sea level, the whole state will be underwater. Guess we better
stop using fossil fuels since that contributes to global warming.
Everybody could just move to the midweat.
Just kidding. We can't control nature, never have, never will. A few
hours of advance notice will only cause a panic of people trying to
leave. Just natures way of thinning the herd. Got more important
things to worry about.

Actually, based on the latest that I've read on it, it's likely that
the island could split with the next major eruption. That particular
volcano erupts every 25 to 200 years, so we could be dealing with
this possibly within our lifetimes.

But really, there's nothing we can do about this. Draining ground
water? Give me a break. It's the magma that's causing the pressure
in the volcano, and removing the water may just give more places for
the magma to go. So you may delay an eruption by a couple decades,
maybe, but certainly nothing that would be worth the cost of the
project.

The advantage that we have is that the east coast would get an 8 to
10 hour warning. That is enough time to get people off the beaches
and to some sort of higher ground. The barrier islands along the
coast may be facing certain disaster, but with proper education and
planning, evacuation routes could be established to give them a
fighting chance. At least those measures would prevent people from
getting sucked out to sea and prevent the mass drownings like we saw
in the Indian Ocean.

Best advice when going to the beach: if the water's heading out to
sea, run like hell.
