McCarren delays

Right now news reports are saying some people had to wait 3-4 hours to get
through security lines. Hopefully as more people become aware of new
regulations they will be getting rid of liquids and checking more luggage in advance
and lines will grow shorter.

My advice - if you are departing early in the a.m. - like 6-7 a.m., allow 3
hours for airport check-in. This may be overkill, but at least you won't
miss your flight. If departing later in the day, allow 4 hours.

You may be able to get more up-to-date information by calling your airline.
Also, check to make sure your flight is departing on time. To save time and
effort, try to check as much luggage as possible, instead of using carry-on.
(Use for valuable items only and don't take liquids, cosmetics, lotions,
creams, gels.) Use check-in at curb if possible.

Be prepared to remove shoes, electronics, coats, etc. and put them through
x-ray. Be sure to pick up your valuables after x-ray along with your ticket
or e-ticket! Be ready with Picture ID as you enter security lines.

They probably will be double-checking at the gate as well, and could once
again go through carry-on luggage, so the less carry-on, the better.

Check online for further details such as changes in security procedures over
the coming days/weeks as they try to simplify (we hope) procedures.

We tried that once and found out that nothing is open until like 5 am,
as I recall. Couldn't check bags, couldn't get through Security until
the staff arrived.

I just checked with my work computer and my airline (AA) opens at 4 am (until 12:30 am) for the ticket counter. I believe the airport self serve machines are available 24 hours and you can check in on MOST airlines on them also -- BUT if you have to check your bags--this doesn't help much--I know. You can check your bags up to 45 min prior to departure but if you can't make if thru security--that's no help either. Hopefully by now, most people will have gotten the message. You can always check the TSA web site- -www.tsa.gov for the latest changes--and believe me--they're changing every day!

Some other suggestions--check in with a sky cap (but many airlines are charging per bag for this service now). One lady told me that she UPSd all her cosmetics etc to her destination, the day before she left--I thot that was the smartest idea yet!

I definately would plan on getting to Mc Carren 3-4 hours ahead of time. . . I know, I know--I can hear the whining now. . . . but if you miss your flight you'll be on STAND BY until you can get out of there! Do you know how full the planes run in and out of Vegas??? VERY FULL!!!! (I've heard horror stories of some people taking 2-3 days to get on a stand-by flight! Heck we had people on our stand-by lists in MILWAUKEE for 2 days this summer!) Other than that, I wish all of you a safe flight and at least we aren't limited to a plastic bag with id and $ for a carry-on on an 8+ hour flight!

My airline counter opens at 5am with a flight at 7am. If you are on a
12 day vacation, odds are you have luggage. If you don't, I hope I am
not sitting next to you.

Our experience might not be typical, but we flew home from Cannon,
in Reno, yesterday morning on American Airlines. Our flight was due
to depart at 11:15AM. We were strongly advised by AA to arrive at
the airport no later than 8:30. That is what we did.

We could have stayed at the casino at least another hour and had NO
problem. The airport was not crowded. We checked our luggage, not
wanting to discard cosmetics etc. We whizzed through security with
no wait whatsoever, and found ourselves with lots of extra time in
which to get very bored.

Our flight left on time, and arrived in Chicago 15 minutes early.
The only hassle we encountered was having to wait 20 minutes, in
Baggage Claim, for our luggage to appear.

I have to think that within the next week the waits at security will
actually be SHORTER than prior to the London incident because so many
more people will be checking luggage, rather than carrying it on....

I apologize in advance! My spelling OCD is screaming. It's McCarrAn,
2 a's no e's. Thank you for your tolerance.

My wife and I just got back. We had a 7AM flight on Sunday and got to the airport at about 4:30. We were able to check bags and get thru security quickly and with no problems. I had called the airport on Saturday and they told me that the screening starts at 4:30.

We also won a little money on VP!!! WOO HOOO!!!
