Machine lockup, was Re: Tipping

The problem with not issuing the W2-G immediately is, the player can find
someone else in a lower tax bracket (or some indigent person who doesn't even
file) to cash the ticket, for a small fee. Since this kind of thing would be
both easy and illegal, the machine is supposed to lockup so the paperwork can
be done on the spot.

Occasionally, when setting up a machine, the techs mess up and don't get the
$1200 number correct for machine lockup. A few years ago, at Silverton, they
put in a couple of dollar 5-plays with 10/7 DB. A friend of mine hit a
Royal, the machine just added 4000 credits, and he kept on playing! It does happen
once in a while.

Heck, catch 7 out of 7 on 4 quarter bet paid $7000.00. Vegas odds but
still only little over 90%. Here was the crazy part; that hit and all
up to 10Gs paid a ticket and customer had 10 days to cash it. Of
course when you cashed it the W2G was issued. Now these machines lock
up at $1200.

The same thing happened to me when I popped a progressive royal at Harrah's
EC some time ago. I just stared at it dumbly when it didn't lock up.

It's not really a problem for the player. Most tracks have what we
called "ten percenters". A whole cottage industry of folks hanging
around the tracks for a piece of the action to cash taxable wins for
winners. In the keno instance I posted about, the ten percenters were
busy. Since these guys worked on a 10% return instead of the
usual .002% vp players work on, maybe they would be super fleas? Nice
money, 10% of jackpot and don't invest a dime.

Cheers....Jeep

Sorry about the flea reference.....

The only difference whether you do or do not get a W2-G is the
paperwork - all wins are taxeable and for those who itemize losses can be
subtracted from them.
