I agree. It is unfortunate that the way that many people are paid is
not by their employer but by the customer, which means they could work
there tail off and get very little. If the job is a minimum wage job
and the tip is not being hustled and tghe service is adequate, a tip is
in order, thsi is as much a cost oif the meal as the prices on the
menu.
I have eaten hundreds of meals in Vegas and only 3 times have I not
tipped, and even ion one of these three times I tipped the busboy
directly as he gave service while I never saw the waiter. the other
two times I was totally ignored the whole meal and attempts to remedy
the situation failed, but out of hudreds of times, 3 terrible
experiences is not bad. Now, where tips are hustled, such as the trick
used by well paid buffet cooks of sticking a plate with money on it to
encourage tipping, this I think is improper. They are well paid and
just want more. In fact certain buffets have stopped this sleazy
practice.
Giving a tip for good service is great, having to bribe for good
service is where I draw the line. On comped meals where the service is
good 15%-20% shouldn't be a problem especially as you are getting the
meal free. Of course, if using a coupon, remeber to base the tip on
the price before the coupon is deducted from the meal as the restaurant
does not make up the difference to the server for the tip when a coupon
lowers the cost oif the meal.

limos) and, like most such folk, I'm a good tipper. My dad never
worked in such an industry but he also was a good tipper out of empathy
- I remember once driving my folks home from a restaurant in a blizzard
and then being sent back to the restaurant to carry a forgotten tip for
our waiter. I've done that myself but by credit card when I found that
one of my dinner companions had stiffed the waiter.Karen
