LVSun - Poll: New Jerseyans prefer gambling in Las Vegas, not in Atlantic City

And, there's a chance of showers here all weekend. Yawn ... tell me
something I don't already know ... (I really had expected dive bombing
sea gulls to factor in somewhere).
The poll is bogus and inconsequential. PA has already taken a bite
out of proposed casinos in the state by establishing draconian taxes.

Being from NJ, I would like to chime in here:
We do have 13 operating casinos. But by the end of the summer, 1
company will own 5 (Harrah's), one company will own 3 (Trump, who I
really thought should have sold one to finance the improvements on
the other two), one company will own 2 (Colony, I can't even bring
myself to call them Resorts). Then there is Boyd/Borgata,
Aztar/Tropicana and the perpetual also ran Icann/Sands. Tell me
where the competition is coming from? When you have competition, you
have good comp givebacks. The ownership structure in AC prevents
that from ever happening.
Video Poker payouts are awful. 9/6 JOB is the best game you are
going to find, and try finding it is 5/25c demoninations. Borgata
only has one place for 25c (at the B Bar). I find very few
progressive machines for any of the good games. Aces and Faces is a
good substitute at EV of 99.2%. And the amazing thing is that
Spanish 21 in AC has a lower house edge than regular BlackJack (see
Wizard of Odds for details). That is why you can never get a seat at
a Spanish 21 game in AC.
All the investment that is taking place in AC has nothing to do with
gambling. The Quarter at Tropicana did not make a single improvement
to a gaming area in the casino, it is all restaurants and shops and
the guest rooms were decorated by a blind man. There is no nite life
on the AC Walk yet. The Pier at Caesars is all retail, clubs and
restaurants and woefully behind schedule. While Harrah's is
investing in their place, the biggest improvements are in the
restaurants (the steakhouse and 'cesca are some of the best in AC).
Let's see what the Trump properties do with the new capital.
The majority of casinos still keep going for the retired
demographics. Resorts new tower is done really well for that. The
doors are wide enough for wheelchairs and has armoirs instead of
closets so people in wheelchairs can reach the rack. I think of it
as an assisted gambling facility. Rumors in Casino Player say that
Trump Marina is going for a roaring 20s theme (please, that
demographic keeps dying every day). The only one even attempting to
challenge Borgata for the younger croud is Showboat with the House
of Blues venue (gotta do the Gospel Brunch!)
There are still tons of bus and day trippers going to this place.
The best thing we could do is give copies of Bob or Jean's books to
everyone that gets off a bus! Educate the players to the better
games and have casinos compete on that. If the slot machines stay
empty and the VP machines always have a croud, then the owners will
take notice.
And last but not least, when they replenished the beaches in AC with
the dunes project they blocked the view of the ocean from the
boardwalk! How stupid was that! The one thing AC had on LV and they
took it away! The only way to see the ocean is to pay $9 a drink at
one of the new beach bars. Probably the single dumbest thing they
did in AC history.
Poor comps, poor VP and not catering to baby boombers with leisure
time or beach interests, no wonder the survey came out the way it
did.
