In addition to the national/regional nature of the strip vs downtown, the
article may not mention the already vulnerable nature of downtown. The
Boulder strip is expected to have a greater handle next year than downtown.
The point being that the downtown handle has been decreasing alarmingly,
even without competition from SoCal.

Nevertheless, when I have visitors from out of town, I direct them to
Downtown if they want to gamble, rather than to the Strip. If they
want to go to a locals casino, we usually go to the Suncoast or maybe
Texas Station.
I would say that Downtown has been doing well during the National
Finals Rodeo--lots of people wearing Stetsons wandering around the
casinos.

Southern California casinos probably hurt downtown because of the people who live in Calif. and stay home rather than haul their asses to Vegas. The megaresorts on the Strip attract the tourists who want to gawk and aren't savvy enough gamblers to know the odds there suck.
Where do you play on the Strip? I haven't found anything playable there except at Barbary Coast, NYNY and the Sahara for cheap blackjack.

I think that you've really got to look closer to home to see where
downtown's problems come from. Any fairly knowledgeable California player
knows that there are numerous advantages to Nevada, including better pay
tables, much better points programs, and much more affordable food and
lodging, not to mention a much better choice of games. And the fact that
there is little or no oversight in California tribal casinos is a factor
that many here in California are very concerned about.
Downtown's problems come mainly from local competition, I believe. Compare
downtown casinos with the newer casinos on the Boulder Strip, for example,
and you can see where people are going, and why. Who'd choose Four Queens
for an overnighter (unless they're comped) when other places are closer,
bigger, brighter, and classier. And, as I mentioned in a previous post, the
Boulder Strip will likely surpass downtown's handle in 2003.
So while downtown's share of the pie is shrinking, Boulder Strip's is
growing enormously. Is that because of California casinos?
In all the years, almost all of the many people in my circle who used to hit
downtown at least once per trip, now avoid it. Once you've seen Fremont
Street Experience, it's enough. People now go to the Boulder Strip, or to
places like Gold Coast or ACs, and seldom bother with downtown. Or they go
to Laughlin instead and avoid Vegas completely. Or they stop at the border
and stay at Buffalo Bills (don't order the eggs Benedict), Primm Valley, or
Whiskey Petes.
There are so many more options to downtown than there were even a few years
ago, that the decline of downtown was inevitable. Blaming California
casinos for downtown's ongoing crisis is ridiculous.
