LVRJ - LV Monorail set to grow

LOL. But, extending it to the airport might be its salvation. It would generally be quicker and cheaper than queuing up for a taxi.

PS: What was that old SNL bit about the bank that only made change? "How do we make money making change? VOLUME!"

I always thought that too. It's a shame the original
route didn't run from the airport right down the middle
of the strip where the new bus lanes will be. Even with
the extension from the airport, I suspect many people who
are staying on the West side of the LV BLVD won't want to
shlep bags from bowels of Bally's across the strip.

I'm skeptical that funding will ever materialize for a
venture that can't cover it's current costs but who knows.

I know that this is beating a dead horse, but does anyone REALLY know why the monorail
did not go right down the center of the Strip, from the airport to the Stratosphere. That
would seem to be a "no-brainer" for me.

The route that they actually built appears "stupid" to me except, possibly, for the
connection to the LV Convention Center, and needing (wanting?) to make some use of the
"original" monorail that went from MGM to Bally's).

Another thought, did the LVH bring pressure to bear to have there be a "stop" at the LVH

The casinos refused to have something "blocking" the front of thier
buildings. They thought it was not "aesthetic". Can't disagree with
them.

OK. Thx. With the LVH, I suppose, there is enough "open space" all around it to make the
monorail's passing in front of it almost invisible.

On the other hand, all of that traffic in front of the casinos, on the Strip, seems not to be
too aesthetic either....LOL

Wouldn't it be nice to close the Strip to all traffic and have it be a "walking mall", with
lawns and trees and fountains...now THAT would be aesthetic (IMO, of course).

Why would they build the new monorail rail in the center of the Strip - when
there was already a rail existing East of the Strip from MGM to
Bally's? It's a "no-brainer" to simply extend it onto the existing rail.

The "existing" portion, running from MGM to Bally's is only a small part of the route built
(and envisioned).

I was just questioning whether a cost analysis was ever performed. Balancing the
convenience of a monorail down the center of the strip versus the (additional) cost of
discarding the existing Bally's to MGM portion.

The problem with monorails is that the infrastructure required to
build them is enormous, costly, and ugly. The monorail would have
taken up the entire view away from the strip. Monorails don't have to
wait for cars, or even affect car traffic, but there is a large price
to pay for those conveniences.

Light Rail or Bus Rapid Transit with its own lane would work very well
on Las Vegas Blvd. Even if they didn't have priority at traffic
signals, they would have their own lane and would travel the rest of
the strip faster.

I checked into the RTC of Southern Nevada's website, and it appears
that they are planning a 33-mile rapid transit corridor with Bus Rapid
Transit between Henderson and Downtown via Las Vegas Blvd. That
should be interesting to see when it is installed in 2015.

I agree. The monorail structure itself can be made fairly light and airy. But, unfortunately,
people want to get on and off the trains. <smile> That means that stations must be built
at frequent intervals. The stations and all of the "people infrastructure" that must be built,
i.e., the walkways, escalators, and elevators make for the clutter that you so rightly point
out as being so aesthetically unbearable.

Sigh! But, something has to be done to eliminate the traffic on the Strip, with its noise and
fumes.

Back to the idea of closing the Strip to vehicular traffic and making it a pedestrian
walkway, with lawns, treees, flowers and fountains. Then, add a tram system of some sort
(like on the mall in Washington, DC) for shuttling people up and down the strip.

Again, just my opinion, of course.

Heh. Then they could put up a canopy over it with billions of lights and
speakers...

I always thought a subway with a station just an escalator down from each
big casino would be cool.
