I would make an experiment out of Binion's if I was capital heavy and wanted to enter the World of Casino Business.

I'd invest heavily in a "freshen up" of everything, and turn back the hands of time to a point where people could eat, drink, play, and stay for cheap. Discretionary comps would be abundant. I'd try to fill every seat in the place, bring back decent VP paytables, decent blackjack games, etc.

Do It Up Old School, and bring back the days where it didn't cost an arm and a leg to bring home some great memories. As long as it's not trading stock, there's not a large shareholder base to satisfy, such as there is with HET and the other bean-counting gaming groups that have sprung up in recent years.

The Mindset or lack of, of all downtown ownership.

Downtown is not the strip. On the strip charging more
and giving less on the games does work in a market
where more and more uneducated gamblers come to Vegas
for a vacation or convention. If they could not fill
the rooms on the strip, the owners would improve
conditions for players and reduce some costs to fill
those rooms.

Downtown is no longer a place for locals. Dozens of
locals casinos have been built right near where most
of the people with money to play in Vegas live. They
do not have to pass street people, parking is easy and
no fighting Vegas traffic to go a few blocks back
home. Plus the casinos are newer and few are really
nice.

Downtown is just downtown. If they do not have the
appeal of the strip to attract the tourist and can no
longer attract the good number of locals, what can
they do.
Well, the current ownership of every hotel except for
the El Cortez has made their gambling games worse.
You can find better games on the strip if you can
afford $10 a hand at blackjack and you can find better
VP at many locals casinos at the same low minimums.
To my thinking, making the games worse will not
attract anyone to downtown. Unless these downtown
owners wake up, the numbers total for all of downtown
will continue to go down as more locals and strip
places are being built and what has happened at the
Horseshoe will be happening to all of them eventually.
Downtown has only one thing to offer and they used to
but do not now, a better gamble.

Hi Victoria,

I agree with most everything you've written in your well thought out
post.

I do believe, however, that you're just a tad too easy on the EC.

Their VP inventory is 1/2 or less, than it was even 2 or 3 years
ago. In place of most of the .25c to $1.00 100%+ EV machines are
noisy video slots and a few horrible pay scale penny VP machines.

Almost every VP machine at the EC used to have the most favorable
pay scale available. Now the knowledgeable player must carefully
select from among a rapidily shrinking inventory
I believe that this will eventually result in the total demise of
the EC. I don't think that their attempt to attract a "young, hip
crowd", in a faux-Palms sort of effort, will succeed. I do suspect
that in the process of attempting to create this new image, that
they will blow away all their former faithful patrons.

Just my opinion of course. I hope that I'm mistaken.
~Babe~

P.S. The EC still offers a great BJ game. If one is able to stand
the smoke, grime, and "interesting" characters that play BJ there,
the game rules are the best in town.
