LVRJ - INSIDE GAMING: New Trop owner trimming work force

CFO Rich Fitzpatrick said. "We believe in managing customers, not other
employees."

Wow, I hope that's a misquote. The guy who landed on the moon was misquoted,
not "One small step for man" but "one small step for a man" Rodney King was
misquoted, not "Can't we all just get along?" but "Can we all get along?"

I'm imagining all sorts of cutbacks. The casino manager handing out those
coupons for the free gift at the gift shop, the poker room having one huge table
with one dealer/poker room manager dishing out cards from a multi deck
shoe, only two security guards, one of them called in sick so no security in the
casino because there's a rumble in the parking lot, more blinking lights in
the casino because of all the top lights indicating a hand pay, people slumped
over dead at their machines, having died of dehydration waiting for their
Cherry Coke order, and the line at the players club longer than any Rio buffet
line you could ever imagine. But, I'm feeling like being managed today so I
think I'll drop by the Trop.

Columbia Sussex is a real estate holding company which operates its
casinos like it's, well, a real estate holding company. I'm not too
optimistic about their chances of running a large, successful casino
company. As the industry in general continues to be in a state of
flux, they'll have a few more opportunities to buy casinos and badly
mismanage them.

The flagship property of the company is the recently acquired
Tropicana AC (although the Vegas property will almost certainly be
closed and torn down and rebuilt at some point in the not too distant
future). While I'm not too keen on the staff, or the infamous "Trop
Ambience", they have a certainly acceptable enough product, and is a
very popular casino fitting the AC model.

I once heard the ambience at the Trop
compared to a bus station bathroom. I'd
say it's more like several hours at a
regional airport. A dirty regional
airport with a bad lounge act.
