consideration than machine "looseness". It also notes that the
percentage of respondants who said Boyd casinos (incl. Coast) have the
best casinos increased from 18% to 24% over the last two years while
those who named Station declined 46% to 36%.
It's all too apparent that the adverse Coast vp inventory moves of the
last two years haven't struck a key sore spot with the greater number
of casino players. Now, more than ever, I'm convinced that Suncoast,
et al have fared very nicely from the elimination of FPDW and 10/7 DB.
LV players had a shot at putting Coast in it's place. But I guess in
the same manner that the wife and I will wander down to the corner
neighborhood bar, even though there's much better to be found just a
10-15 min. walk away, the simple creature comfort of heading for the
neighborhood casino holds greater appeal than testing out a more
distant casino for better vp. (And, hey, were I in proximity of
Suncoast I can't say I'd do differently -- the place is a peach!)

Let's take a look at my immediate neighborhood: Green Valley Ranch.
Within five minutes are the three heavy hitters: GVR, Sunset, And
Fiesta Henderson. If I want to go out to eat, there are dozens of
choices. Ditto going out to a movie. And needless to say, lots of
fullpay VP, and even multiple point days and free play in the mail.
So what would it take to get me across town? Only the Palms, with
its highly generous mailed offers and great VP, or once a month
(period) to the Orleans to get their 1% rebate mailer ($100 value on
$19K coin-in). And how many times have I visited Rampart/Suncoast in
the last two years? How about ACW? ACE/Sam's? Fiesta Rancho/Texas?
Probably not a dozen visits among all of them in that time, although
sometimes there have been GREAT plays/promos there (ACW's daily cash
kickback is a good deal, for example, but you'd have to hold me at
gunpoint to get me to drive over there every day.).
The sad fact is that Vegas traffic is such a revolting experience,
that it takes a MAJOR reason to drive across town (if it isn't 3
AM). My personal coupon threshold has risen to $30; if I;ve got a
coupon that's worth less than that (or a free play offer), then I'll
keep the coupon in my car on the off chance that I'll happen by
there, but I WON'T make a special trip. Lazy, I know. But the
traffic just wears me down after a while.
Apparently the market agrees with me; housing values on this side of
town seem to have a DIRECT correllation to casino access (as well as
freeway access). I indeed do see the same people over and over at my
three nearby casinos. So it IS true---convenience is the major
factor, with fullpay VP trailing in the dust. Gold Coast, Suncoast,
and Orleans are still full, and they're building South Coast on Las
vegas Blvd. about seven miles south of Mandalay Bay; this despite
the total destruction of FPVP in those properties.
The funny thing is, I didn't choose where to live because of
proximity to casinos; I did so because of proximity to schools,
shopping, services, the freeway, etc. But it appears that a large
portion of the perceived value of my neighborhood is the fact that
you can drive to three different casinos in under ten minutes. Oh,
well....I guess I'll blow that particular horn when I sell this
place.

Sadly, no. Present company excepted, they aren't really much more savvy that most tourists. I think the notion that locals would riot and flee casinos that did not offer FPVP was one part myth, one part wishful thinking, and one part vast overestimation of the average Las Vegan's intelligence.

AMEN, BROTHER! While traffic isn't yet quite as bad as in many major cities, it's gotten bad enough to discourage me from playing anyplace more than a three or four miles from my home or work. It's become something of a factor to consider as far as EV/hour goes - if it takes an hour roundtrip to collect that silly $10 freeplay, it definitely isn't worth my while. And it's not just the time, it's the danger to life and limb. My wife got rear-ended on I-15 a couple of months back (traffic stopped; the guy behind her didn't). She wasn't hurt, but it's made us reflect on just HOW BAD your average drunken/hungover/pissed-off/suicidal/hyperactive/risk-taking Las Vegan motorist is. A day rarely passes when I don't see a wreck. Indeed, I've seen nine accidents AS THEY OCCURRED in the four years I've lived here; including two in the same day. I've seen motorcyclists "surfing" on their bikes a 100 MPH. Yesterday a ladder-toting sedan passed me (I was only doing 70 MPH in the right lane, my bad!) on the Summerlinn Parkway by driving IN BETWEEN me and the car in the left lane. It's insanity. It brings a whole new meaning to the concept of "risk of ruin".

Agreed...there are just a handful of "skilled" players. Just look at
the great number of DDB machines at all denominations in the "locals"
casinos. Or look at the person playing next to you and watch their
holds...a far cry from a 100 watt bulb!

Jersey and thought nothing of hopping in the car and driving 100 to

Sounds like an easy to use mass transport system would
solve the traffic problem.

I used to do that, but driving down the Garden State Parkway
was easy! Set it on cruise and enjoy!
I will drive 1 hour at highway speed with no traffic instead
of 10 minutes in stop and go traffic.
I think distance is irrelevant. Its pain that is important.
