LVA Question of the Day - 9 MAY 2008

I also enjoyed and appreciated Marcela's post--I've known her since the
Palms opened. A very nice, smart, and attractive lady, and very good at her job.
Her insight gives us all the "rest of the story."

And Scot, my original post referred only to the latest Megabucks winner, and
how she failed to tip anything to the slot personnel. I had no knowledge of
her tips, or lack thereof, to the cocktail servers.

However, AFAIK, you are correct. None of the three Palms Megabucks winners
have tipped anything to slot personnel. I think you all know by now how I feel
about this. And ignorance is no excuse. During the hours and days
immediately following the hit, dozens of people are sure to have asked these people,
"How much did you tip?"

The latest winner won an equivalent of around $6 million lump sum after
taxes. If it were me, I would have tipped $5000 to $10,000, mostly to slot
personnel, but some to the CWs, Security, my casino host, and other people who have
treated me well at the Palms. But that's just me. For "normal" VP hand pays,
I tip 1/2% with a minimum of $10.

Speaking just for myself, I appreciated Marcella's post. It gave
interesting insight into just how mega-winners tip on their wins. In
any case, there was no harm that could be possibly be cited.

Wasn't it in response to Brian's post saying the Megabucks winners never
tipped anything there? She perhaps was explaining? Sheesh, people, lighten
up!

I think it's all relative. To my mind, I'm running a business, but
also am aware that others around me are trying to make a living too.
So, for better or worse, I try to balance the two as best I can. I
know a couple high rollers who play $25 and $100 machines and feel
it's beneath them to tip on big hands or even a royal, it's part of
playing the high roller mystique to their eyes. I understand where
they're coming from, what I would consider an appropriate gratuity
might be looked upon as "cheap", so they don't bother with it.

Moreover, after the first $100 of tipping, the goodwill factor
diminishes dramatically. But I still think you have to give them
something. On a $100K royal, I'd probably tip $100 with maybe a gift
to my host. I don't see the point in more, but that's me.

CWs get tipped reasonably ($1-$5 a trip depending) win or lose. I
don't see the point in giving more because I won big.

If I hit the Megabucks, and I was a frequent player where I'd hit it,
I'd share the wealth, but not as much as Brian. And then take some
serious time off lol...

Maybe the winners were down to their last 20's when they hit, and since
they give you a check instead of cash, did not have anything to tip
with. I don't know I have never won Megabucks, do they give you part
of it in cash?

It has always been my understanding that casino hosts can never
accept a cash gratuity no matter what. A personal gift or something
like a gift certificate to a restaurant is I believe acceptable.

There is one sure way to find out. Sit down at Megabucks at the Casino of Your choice. Play 534,000,000 times (I think these are the odds to one) and when you hit it, please post how they paid you as soon as you deposit the check. Thanks
