LVA Question of the Day - 9 FEB 2006

Q: I heard that the name "Summerlin" was the maiden
name of Howard Hughes's grandmother. If so, is the
City of Summerlin named after her?

There is no such place as the "City of Summerlin." Summerlin is a
planned development within the City of Las Vegas. And, of course, we
all know that the Strip is not part of Las Vegas, don't we? (unless
you want to include the Stratosphere)

What does "....the Strip is not part of Las Vegas...." mean?

If the Strip (Las Vegas Blvd.) is not in Las Vegas, what city is it in?

If I remember correctly, it's not part of any city. It's an
unincorporated part of Clark County. If my memory is right there is an
agreement between the county and the city so that city police patrols
the strip (don't quote me on that, I'm likely to be slightly or
entirely wrong on that one).

Part of the confusion arises from the fact that the Strip is served by
the Las Vegas Post Office so their addresses say XXX Hotel, Las Vegas,
NV XXXXX. Other places in the country have the same problem in that
the mail delivery area for a specific post office is not necessarily
contiguous with the city of the same name. I've always said that the
Strip casinos would be much more inclined to become part of Las Vegas
if their addresses were required to be the accurate "Unincorporated
Clark County, NV XXXXX or if the famous sign said "Welcome to Fabulous
Unincorporated Clark County." Perhaps Mayor Goodman should charge the
casinos a royalty for using his City's name. The name of the upcoming
mega-development on the Strip "Project City Center" is a joke.

I'm constantly amazed at how many people don't know that the Strip is
not in Las Vegas.

While it's in the Las Vegas valley, the strip is outside of the Las Vegas city limits.

Yes, thanks, I gathered that from reading the posts. I was just
wondering why I should have know that.

Thanks, deuces. I was thinking the same thing. Why is George constantly
amazed at how many people don't know that the Strip is located outside the
incorporated city of Las Vegas? It seems pretty understandable to
me.....not 'amazing' in the least.
