LVA Question of the Day - 6 DEC 2010

Q: Joe K's trip report [on the LasVegasAdvisor.com forums]
mentions that Laughlin is in serious trouble. I have read
volumes on the Vegas problems but that is the first I've
heard about Laughlin. Do you have more info?

I spent a whole lot of time in Laughlin from 1996-2002. I called the town "RFB 365" which literally means RFB 365 days a year. Of course, the video poker was much better in those days than it is now.

I got to know the seasons there pretty good. Thanksgiving weekend is the last busy weekend until Christmas/New Year's. Laughlin goes deader than a doornail after Thanksgiving weekend. It's the slowest period of the year. I remember rooms going as low as $5 a night to anyone off the street. Promotions were usually much better during this time frame.

But things change dramatically once Christmas Day arrives. Christmas through New Year's is the busiest week of the year in Laughlin. The hotels and casino floors are packed. Packed with neophyte gamblers. It was a humongous opportunity for advantage slot players and linked bank flush attack players.

The neophytes left huge play after huge play on the advantage slots. It was a big big money earn for hustlers. We used to laugh like hell at what the neophytes would leave on those bonus slots.

We always hated to see it end. Once New Year's was over we were back to the grind. Those were the good old days for sure. I'm getting homesick for that town. Probably not near as good today though.
