The LVA Question of the Day for 9/4 was:

Q: I know there are lines offshore for who will win the
presidency. Can you tell me who´s favored and by what odds?

Part of the answer is that Vegas casinos can't take bets on elections.

In fact, here is the list of things on which Nevada sports books can't
take bets:
1. Elections;
2. Any other non-sporting event, without permission of the chairman
of the Gaming Commission (which, I am led to believe, rarely if ever
happens - for example, you can't bet on the Oscars);
3. Any "amateur non-collegiate" sporting event (this includes the
Olympics, presumably as the IOC does not give out cash prizes - it's
not a question of "salary" as professional golfers do not get a
regular salary but betting on the PGA is legal);
4. Any professional team sporting event taking place in, or involving
a team from, Nevada, without permission of the head of the team's
league (NBA commissioner David Stern is dead set against it - he not
only made sure that betting on the NBA All-Star Game that was held in
Vegas was not allowed, but he had the ban extended to the 3-point
shooting and slam dunk contests as well).
(If you're a college athlete or coach, you also can't bet on a game in
which your school is involved.)

For those of you wondering why Indian casinos don't open sports books,
see Title 28, Section 3704(b) of the United States Code (which says
that they can't in states that don't allow sports books anyway).
