LVA Question of the Day - 4 MAY 2007

Q: Someone told me that the servers on the casino floors get
charged for the "free" drinks that they serve. Is this true,
or is it another of the Las Vegas legends? It will make a
difference in how I tip if it is true. And how much does a
cocktail waitress actually earn?

The answer in Las Vegas Advisor is incorrect. Last summer, 5 local
cocktail waitresses were followed for a week with hidden cams while at
work a major hotels by a local TV station including one at the Paris
Hotel (with their knowledge and concent). For EVERY drink they
serve, the hotel reports a tip of $0.54 to the IRS. So if you don't
tip, they pay income tax on .54. I always tip $1.00, but if the
server is nice and prompt, I will tip between $2.00 - $5.00. This is
hard work walking these long distances day after day. A lot of people
are rude, don't tip, move or leave after they order and treat these
ladies unfairly. I go out of my way to brighten their day whenever I can.
