LVA Question of the Day - 3 JUL 2007

Q: While cashing out at the cage at Caesars Palace I was told
by the cashier that, starting on the 1st of July, I would need
to provide my Social Security number (I had $4,000 in chips).
Any idea what this new regulation is?

This is quite concerning. I have never been fortunate enough to go to
the cage w/ $10k in chips on me, yet this reply would indicate that
even if I were blessed in this way I should cash them in incrementally
or at separate cages in the same casino. I would much rather cash in
$2500 four times than $10k once if it meant not releasing more details
of my personal affairs to the government.

I appreciate the efforts to counter money laundering. Thinking about
this, it would be conceivable for a criminal to come in with fake or
stolen bills, buy into a high stakes table game, and then immediately
walk away from the table headed straight to the cage.

The problem with this type of law and many others like it is that
honest players who are there to enjoy themselves are now potentially
going to be targeted by agencies simply for having luck at the tables.

That's called "structuring."

It's a felony.
