LVA Question of the Day - 29 JUN 2007

Q: My wife and I come to Vegas twice a year and always stay at
a major hotel on the Strip. Our last visit was this June. The
new problem we encountered is the ease with which a thief can
simply push a cashout button and remove a payout slip from a
slot machine. An attempt was made on a machine my wife was
using and we witnessed a successful grab from another slot
player as well. This was virtually an unheard-of practice when
coins were being used. My question is, why are the casinos not
doing more to warn unsuspecting slot players of this practice?
Especially since slots are responsible for such a large portion
of their income. This problem is becoming epidemic and can only
hurt players and casinos alike.

Here is a useful suggestion for video poker players. I don't
remember if I have read this somewhere before or not, but anyway...

TITO theft is most likely to be attempted in a busy, crowded casino
when you are distracted by something such as the waitress bringing
you a drink, someone asking you a question, etc. So if you see that
such a situation is about to occur (such as the waitress has come
back with your drink order), go ahead and deal yourself a hand, hold
the correct cards, then WAIT. Your credits can't be cashed out while
you're in the middle of a hand. If some thief hits your cash out
button, nothing will happen and he'll move on to somewhere else.
Once you can devote your full attention to the game, hit draw and
continue playing.

Here is a useful suggestion for video poker players...deal yourself

a hand, hold

the correct cards, then WAIT. Your credits can't be cashed out

while

you're in the middle of a hand.

VERY good advice. I even do this if I have a friend playing next to
me who will watch my machine and I leave for a bathroom break.

I just read the Yahoo summary of my most recent post, and I want to
assure the vpFREE community that it is taken out of context. I do not
have a "hand hold" when I "leave for the bathroom." Please read the
whole posting.
