Odds definitely change on a multi-game -- it's happened to me more
than once ...

You've been playing awhile, a friend sits down next to you who you
haven't seen in awhile. You turn and shoot the breeze for 10 minutes
or so and return back to your machine.

You play for 5 or 10 minutes and are taken aback when in your Jacks or
Better play a Joker shows its face. You stare dumbfounded a few
seconds and then slap your forehead. The machine cycled over to
another game during the hiatus ... you're playing a subpar return game
with a hideously ignorant strategy (hey, that lone Jack looked kinda
like a Joker
