LVA Question of the Day - 23 JAN 2009

The last jackpot I hit, I gave .8% of my jackpot to the people who brought the cash, because they were especially nice. I tip the waitresses in the club $2 per person. I don't order drinks while playing.

But I have to admit that I think back to the tips that I have given to the money deliverers, and feel very foolish. They don't work for tips. They earn a decent salary.

I delivered newspapers during my high school years, so I've been on both ends of the tipping side. About half of the customers gave tips.

I think that the cleaning person that wipes down your machine, or cleans the areas between the machines deserves a tip more than the people who deliver the money. Last time I went, I gave a tip to one of these cleaning person. She was so surprised because nobody ever thinks of her. Why don't Bob Dancer and Jean Frugal mention the cleaning lady?

The answer is because there is nothing in it for them. Why tip a dealer? The answer is tat if you do, sometimes they will make a "mistake" in your favor if you do. In other words, you are bribing them in advance to chea for you.

It's funny you would say that. The last time I was Green Valley Ranch I was having a good night and gave the cleaning lady who was cleaning the machines a ten dollar tip. Her happiness was worth a lot, it was so unexpected. I like to do that sort of thing for those people as well as the people who are taking care of the restrooms.

Valerie,
you are absolutely right, and I'm a bit embarrassed that I've never thought about the cleaning people in the casino proper before.
I always leave $1 for the restroom attendant if there's one present, and very often tip the cleanup people in the lounge directly, in addition to the waitperson.

But one group that I think people tend to stiff are the waitstaff in buffets. My admittedly unscientific observation is that probably 1/3rd of people seem to leave no tip at all for them. While some might say that they don't deserve a full 15-20% like those in a full-service restaurant, c'mon folks, at least leave a couple of bucks for those that bring your beverages and clean off the tables while you're getting your 17th dessert.

I have often thot about these same cleaning people as we discuss to the 9th degree
about tipping on a jackpot. A buck to these cleaning people as well as those that
clean the bathroom (would YOU clean a public bathroom???) is really appreciated.
It is fun to see their eyes light up when they aren't expecting it. . . . . . Maybe others
think that "that is their job" and so it is---but I really appreciate how clean THEY keep
the machines and restrooms. Just a thot. . . . . .

From "More Frugal Gambling," where there is a whole chapter on tipping.

"We like this spread-it-around idea even for major jackpot tipping. In some casinos where we play often, we know what system the employees have concerning tips they receive. Some keep all their own tips, but in many places there are sharing arrangements. However, we usually ignore this factor when we hit a big jackpot and just try to share our happiness with as many employees as we can. I don't really care that the casino rotates the change people to do handpays; I do not like to give one big tip to a change person I have never seen before he/she arrives to count out my stack of hundred dollar bills. So if I plan to tip $40-$50 for this big jackpot, I will give the hand payer only $20 and then see how far I can spread joy by offering $5 to everyone who shows up - floor people, supervisors, security, whoever. Some may not be allowed by casino policy to accept tips, but they are happy I offered. Whatever tip money is left over, I distribute to other employees who have made my day pleasant - the hard-working porter that keeps our machine area clean, the bathroom attendant who always has a cheerful greeting for me, the cocktail waitress who will bring me hot tea AND a bottle of water at the same time, the friendly change girl who has been rooting for a jackpot on my machine all day.

"This spread-it-around system, especially in a casino where you play frequently, can give you a very generous reputation at the same time you are staying well within your tipping budget."

If I get a W2G, I'll only tip the person who shows up first to greet
me and take my ID. I have very rarely ever tipped the person who
actually pays me. You would be surprised the amount of hangers-on
who migrate for these situations.

I was in Vegas the past two weekends and every restroom I entered was (at

Terribles, Orleans, Rio, Treasure Island, and Planet Hollywood.

One, in particular (at Rio), smelled so bad I had to immediately leave and
find another one.

BTW, I really like the idea of tipping the ladies cleaning the machines next
to me. I'm going to do that next time.

I have never seen a dirty restroom in vegas, although the last 3 yrs I have
been strictly at the Palms when I go. I think tipping the bathroom
attendant and person who clean's up by the machine is a wonderful idea!! I
will definately be doing that next week when I go!!

The restrooms at Ballys are clean--not spotless, but clean. The Paris
restrooms are very clean as are MGM, NYNY, Harrahs, Bills, Flamingo.
The Mirage restroom--when I could find it. . . . .was also very clean.
There usually is a female cleaning person around when I enter these
facilities. The restrooms at Gold Coast are almost spotless as well
as 4 Queens. This is from when I was there 2 weeks ago.

I also keep a few extra $1s and if I see someone actively cleaning
the restroom I'm in or around the machines I'm at (esp if they clean
up a "mess" someone left) I'll give them a buck-- AND I tell them
that I appreciate their efforts. I know what it's like to feel like your
efforts are almost "part of the wood-work" and I'm sure that a buck
here or there goes a long way towards adding to these people's day.
That's just my two cents. . . . .

Very generous action KJHaka.

I hate the people who throw cigarettes and
other junk into urinals, on the floor, etc
and create a mess instead of using proper
disposal places.

Of course, these same people would never
tip, etc etc.
