LVA Question of the Day - 23 JAN 2009

Q: I recently won a $2,400 jackpot at a locals casino in Vegas.
Once the slot attendant & staff paid out my money, I really
didn't have a clue how much if any to tip her. Should one tip the
staff on a jackpot winner? If so, what are the tipping
guidelines?

I think the guidelines Jean Scott proposes are not too bad, but it certainly depends on the casino and the levels of hand payout: at Mohegan Sun, for example, on $1 machines, everything $500 & above requires a hand payout. As experienced players all know, you can easily be down several multiples of that amount, and it is rather annoying to be tipping when you're only receiving back a small part of your losses for getting quads, for example. Not to mention the wait for an attendant to finally get to you, and the unnecessary interruption of your play.

I always make sure that I have a good supply of $5's and $10's, since even if you have one of the $100's broken, they'll typically only give you $20's, and they try to make you feel cheap if you ask for smaller bills. I generally give $5 for $500-1000 payouts, $10 for a second $1000 to the same attendant, or for any other payout above $1000 and less than $4000, and $20 for $4000 and larger. If I'm really doing well, I would up it a little.

In AC, at least at the Harrah's properties, anything less that a W2G
payout just gets credited to your machine. I really like that system
much better.
