Please pardon this rant from Indian Country regarding the following statement:
"Environmentalists, similarly, take issue with erecting such a "conspicuously commercial edifice in the Grand Canyon, tantamount to defacing a national treasure."
Oh, please. Two points:
1) You cannot "deface" something the size of the Grand Canyon with a little glass-bottomed arch. For those of you who have not visited, the most compelling feature of the Grand Canyon is its size. It's the definition of the word "huge". You need a telescope to pick out the walkway from the north face or the canyon floor.
2) To put things in perspective, at nearby Guano Point, there exists the remnants of an abandoned guano mine (see photo link, below). In addition to the hideous structure in the photo, there is a the accompanying broken down cable car supports running up and down the canyon walls. Any fund-raisers to clean up this eyesore? Nah. It's a "historical treasure".
Rant over. Thank you for your time.
