LVA Question of the Day - 16 JUL 2009

Q: Whatever happened to the "underground" at Caesars Palace. It
was located beneath the Sportsbook. You could eat there in
individual rooms, be visited by a roving magician, lots of
thunder and lightning. It was exciting. Is it still down there or
was it replaced by something?

This was one of our favorite events in the old pre-Harrahs Caesars. Keep in mind that you had the illusion of the room descending by combining three things: a rumbling sound, gradually cooling temperatures, and fixed items on the wall (such as a painting or a light fixture) moving up. You then wandered through a maze and eventually ended up at a nice dinner.

Many guests enjoyed this experience as a "buy one, get one free" or as a comp. Like the theme park at the MGM Grand opening, gone forever, I suppose.

Speaking of casinos' undergrounds, I miss the sports bar in the Monorail/parking garage access tunnels between Paris and Bally's. Depending on who was tending bar, you could get a dangerously strong drink, perfect Hair of the Dog remedy. A drink strong enough to make you forget how abysmal were the pay tables on the bartop vp machines.
