LVA Question of the Day - 16 APR 2008

Q: The Missus, some friends, and myself are coming to Las
Vegas at the end of May. I successfully lobbied our little
group to stay downtown at the Golden Nugget to try something
new. Now that I've convinced everyone to stay downtown, what
would you recomend as the top things that we should do in
order to get the most out of our Downtown Field Trip?

Man they missed some significant downtown activites:

How about playing what's that smell in each of the
casinos? You can use any combination of Urine,
Pine Sol, Smoke and Fried foods.

How about name the waitress at the Vegas club that
babysat for FDR's kids? This is harder than it
sounds.

Or I'll bet you $5 you can't eat whatever's deep
fried at the Bayou this week?

You say you're coming in May? What about watching
the annual migration of the homeless in the spring?

LVA, I expected better.

More frequently than not, I agree with many of the observations that
poster "worldbefree" publishes on the board. Today however, my
opinion is quite divergent from his comments on downtown.

I have always loved downtown. I feel that the downtown area
exemplifies much of what I enjoyed years ago, in "old Las Vegas". I
have never felt unsafe, unsatisfied or uncomfortable during any
downtown sojourn.

I have just returned from 5 fun-filled days (and nights) in a
downtown hotel. I enjoyed my trip throughly, appreciated the good
VP still available (with a little bit of scouting) the ease of
earning comps, the friendliest of the casino staff and the feeling
that my patronage was still valued.

I know that "worldbefree" posted his feelings in a humorous
tongue-in-cheek manner, but felt that I would add my 2c worth lest
some others be discouraged from participating in the good things
that the downtown area has to offer.

Hi, Babe. I'm like you. I still believe downtown is a great value.
But I must point out what I believe are a couple of discrepencies in
the LVA QOD. I believe the balcony at Fitzgerald's has been closed--
something about flying beer bottles during the light show. And the
old Victory Hotel is now a homeless shelter. Good luck.

Hi Babe,

Absolutely kidding. Downtown is where I spend my
time when I'm in Vegas and I also feel a strong
affinity for it. But some of the corny/gritty
stuff is what I love too.

WBF...... LVA also missed:
- 3 to 2 blackjack rather the Strip's 6 to 5
- Gamblers Book Store

- far superior video poker (except for the Palm)

-20X (MSS) and 10X (EC) odds on $5 craps tables compared to the Strip's mostly $10 minimum bet and on 3-4-5X odds
- friendlier (yes some are old, but so am I) waitresses who thank you for a $1 tip
- Reasonably priced and, in many cases, cheap and good food

- Easier to get comps compared to the Strip

- No people that give out the porn cards

Yes, there are some characters that walk around Freemon Street, but so does the Strip. I will admit that the Strip has the glitz, but downtown has my kind of atmosphere.

Thanks for explaining, World! I feel exactly as you do.

For your ardent support of our beloved downtown, I hope that you win
one of the current jackpot prizes offered by the El Cortez. For any
VP payoff of $300 or more, you can be the proud possesser of a
fluffy, white towel, prominently emblazoned with the distinctive El
Cortez logo. For just TWO of those jackpots, you can select a
matching robe. Be still my heart!

If you're of a more conservative bent, you can chose a $10 gift card
instead. That's the boring choice I made last week, when I
visualized EH's reaction to the thought of decorating our master
bathroom with EC logowear. {{O:

Fortunately, I also had a W2G to present to EH, so all was cool in
our little corner of the world!

Many royals, aces & deuces to you, while visiting our fun downtown
area!

Theres a migration that starts around 3:30 PM everyday as the down-
and-outers start heading north from downtown up to Bonanza then west
under the railroad viaduct and up to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
Dinner is at 5:00 PM and the line starts forming around 3:30 PM. A
big bowl of beans, milk and bread.

Many of the homeless will be leaving LV soon. When it gets too hot
they migrate up to Salt Lake City. Don't ask me how I know all
this.
