LVA Question of the Day - 1 OCT 2005

Q: My parents turned me onto coupons on our many trips
to Vegas. Recently, on a first date, I took the girl to
a restaurant where I had a 2-for-1. She got irate. She
said it was rude that I was only paying for my own meal,
not hers. Then she said that it made her feel cheap,
which seemed even worse than if she'd accused me of
being cheap. By the way, it was a nice restaurant, and
the bill, after the coupon and with tip, still came to
40 bucks. Any comment from the coupon people?

What a pair ... a guy who hasn't a clue that thriftiness on a first
date will impress only the exceptional woman (more likely leaves the
lass wondering if he'll ultimately be browsing pawn shops for an
engagement ring), and a gal who hasn't the grace nor wit to keep her
mouth shut when clearly she'll never see the guy again.

I expect they'll each be on the dating circuit well into their 40's,
unless eharmony.com works wonders.

Harry, I have to agree with you except I think they may be in their 40's already. Also he said that he had to pay $40 for the one meal. I did not know Denny's prices were so high.

For what it's worth, my first date with Shirley was a casino-comped
meal --- and our courtship was carried out primarily over special-event
weekends at Treasure Island and Mirage. I ended up marrying the perfect
woman --- save for the fact that she likes to hold a suited ace-ten!

(Hopefully the vpFREE administrator will forgive me for this
unprovoked, personal attack on Shirley!)

Had Shirley objected to me using comp dollars to pay for things, it
would have been a relationship-stopper. Building and preserving bankroll
was (and is) of primary importance. Anyone not sharing these
thriftiness-values was automatically disqualified from being datable.

Of course, when this happened Shirley and I were both in our early
fifties and had been around the dating block a time or two. At that age,
sensibility ls more important than hormones in these matters.
Fortunately, with Shirley I was able to find a sensible woman who
activated my hormones!

I said it would be an "exceptional woman" who might be impressed by
such a move and it's long been suggested that Shirley indeed qualifies.

But, to be real, there's quite a difference between this and a guy who
looks to save on the price of an upscale entree using a BOGO coupon.
Someone who possesses the wit to rate with a casino sufficiently to
warrant a comp without losing their shirt in the process stands as a
rather exceptional player himself.

I have one word for a girl who acts like that on a date:

"Next!"

I so want one of the math guys to answer this question
with some spin about EV. You figure out what EV is
an acronym for.

they cause. Turn gay.

Or Single and always use protection. Don't get snagged.

He could have been more discrete with the coupon. She had no need to
know that he was paying with a comp, coupon, Discover card cash
refund, IRS refund(your own money back), ...

Anyone that complains about a FREE meal doesn't deserve a second date.
Let her pay the $40 next time, Feminism and all.

Will take any free meal if offered,

Disagree , in my experience women have a lot more class & brains than
this twit,& why in the heck would you would settle for less than
exceptional anyway???

, and a gal who hasn't the grace nor wit to keep her

mouth shut when clearly she'll never see the guy again.

If he is LUCKY or SMART he wont.

Been gone for a week and trying to get caught up on a mountain of e-mail and snail mail - at the beginning of the month at that. But I will have to tune in on the subject of using coupons on a first date. This is really the ONLY way to find a frugal mate if you are frugal yourself. Not only would I be disappointed to find a man who had a coupon and didn't use it - my perfect man was delighted when I pulled out a coupon I just "happened" to have in a baggie of coupons in my purse "just in case" he had chosen a restaurant that I was "prepared" for!!!! And you can bet when he asked me for a restaurant choice, I ALWAYS chose one for which I had a coupon!!! Brad says I am nutty frugal - but he loves the lifestyle my frugalness has made possible for us!!!!
