I don't have a map handy, but I think you're smoking more than a turkey today if you think it is only 136 miles from Tonopah to Fallon. The total trip is closer to 500 miles.
I've probably driven this route 15-20 times and still love it.
For rockhounds, there is a premium spot near Goldfield.
Walker Lake never fails to thrill, but it is best enjoyed driving from north to south.

Mapquest.com shows the distance as 450 miles from Vegas to Reno, obviously the exact distance would vary based on where you live in Vegas and where you're going to in Reno (or vice versa).
At that mileage, it should still take a little over 5 hours. Those roads are not hard to average 90 on even given the slow-down speed traps by the small towns. Even if you only drive 70 (please stay in the right lane if you're gonna do this, slowpoke) you're looking at a 6.5 hour drive.
