LV-Reno drive

About how many hours is this drive and what is the optimum route to take?

Thanks

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Google, yahoo and mapquest all suggest the same 450-mile route (US-95
to fallon, then US-50 and I-80). Google and yahoo estimate that it
takes 11h30, mapquest estimates 9 hours. Mapblast suggests a slightly
shorter 425-mile route by taking a shortcut on "SR-89" in 8h45, but
since "SR-89" barely shows on the maps and isn't described by the NV
DOT I would first double-check before taking that road.

I think that this might have been an LVA question of the day.

It takes about 5 hours depending on how fast you're willing to drive. Take the 95 thru Tonopah and up to Reno. The directions on mapquest.com look about right...

Funny, indeed the "classic" yahoo claims 7 hours for the trip, while
the "beta" one claims 11h30 (all on the same route).

I assume you are not in hurry to get to Reno, or you would take a
plane. I took the "scenic" route, and although it took all day, it was
a wonderful trip. Take 95 to Beatty, west on 374 through Death Valley
to Hwy 395. North on 395 along the east side of the Sierra Nevada
mountains will take you right into Reno. Lots of places to stop and see
along the way. Warning: This might not be the best route during the
dead of winter, as they have chain controls and ice to deal with at
times.

5 Hours? I think you better have a state of the art radar detector.

Hamstockman;
I take it you don't find the brothels and ammo dumps along 95 to be scenic? By the way EZ, there is a candy/ice cream/gift/souvenier store across the parking lot from the Stagecoach casino in Beatty. It's worth a visit. Biggest candy store I've ever seen and some interesting gift/souveneir items in the side shops.

I agree with the radar detector purchase. I have gotten several tickets entering and exiting the towns out there. Many of the tickets could have protested but they are well aware that few will make the trip to go to court.

For any roadie you need a good detector. That includes trips up to Reno and especially anywhere in Arizona. My radar detectors (I have one for each of the cars I drive) have paid for themselves over and over. I would recommend a Valentine One or a Beltronics RX65 plus an alert pair of eyes.

Or, you could be a nerd, drive the speed limit, lose some time (but enjoy the scenery, if
there is any), and save the expenses.

About how many hours is this drive and what is the optimum route

to take?

Thanks

I just made the trip last week for the second time in two months.
Took 95 north to Fallon and then alt 50 to Fernley and 80 into Reno.

I departed from Craig Road on 95 at 8 AM...stopped in Tonopah for
gas...stopped in Fernley briefly to stock up on Skoal and was at the
Peppermill at 3 PM. I drove on cruise control at exactly 5 MPH over
the posted limit. Got held up once for a few minutes for
construction north of Walker Lake but, other than that, the rest of
the trip was delay free.

So far, I've made same trip from Reno to LV using the same route
twice in the last two months with about the same experience. Hope
this answers your question.

They add 10 miles per hour to your ticket, also. At least that's what
happened to me once just north of Beatty. The officer even said that
other people had complained about how high a speed he had recorded me
at. That trip has always taken me 9 hours.

As someone who drove this about once a month for a few years, I have
a (perhaps too) detailed answer to this question (assumes that you
drive 10 MPH above speed limit the whole way, I use cruise control
religiously and never received a ticket in 20+ roundtrips):

Reno-Las Vegas

0:00 Vista Exit off I-80
0:21 Exit I-80 to use Alt 95 route through Yerington
0:55 Mason Valley
1:01 Yerington
1:22 Rejoin US 95 and Exit Alt 95
1:54 Hawthorne
2:18 Lunning
2:43 US6/US95 Junction - Stay on 95
3:13 Tonapah
3:41 Leave Tonapah
4:30 Scotty's Junction
4:56 Beatty
5:40 Clark County Line
5:49 Indian Springs
6:10 Durango Exit off US95
6:25 Las Vegas Spaghetti Bowl

So... about six hours, ten minutes, city line to city line, give or
take...! (By the way, the decision to use Alt 95 through Yerington
or US95 through Fallon is strictly personal preference, they are
almost exactly the same length of time.)

Hope this helps.

Brothels, ammo dumps, candy and ice cream? The mind reels at the
possibilities...

Chandler
