LV Hilton- What's an open account and discretionary comp?

In vpFREE directory, it says:

"ANY comp (open account, or discretionary) written by your host at
the LVH DOES trigger a trip! If you go to the slot club and get the
(open account) comp, no trip is triggered!"

What's an open account and discretionary comp?
And what do you mean by trip? (ie: airfare reimbursed??)

David,

Hopefully, I get this right. If not, I'm sure that someone else
will set me straight. <g>

"ANY comp (open account, or discretionary) written by your host at

What's an open account and discretionary comp?

An open account comp are those comps that are generated by your play
or coin-in. In LVH's case, these comps are generated at a rate of
appx. .33% . These comps dollars can be recovered at the slot club -
or, if LVH has them, any self-service kiosk. These comp dollars can
be used on anything within LVH and other PPE hotels/casinos.

Discretionary comp are those comps that are given to you (or approved
by) a slot host. These usually don't come out of your comp $
balance. A very common case of this is getting your room charges
paid for by the host.

And what do you mean by trip? (ie: airfare reimbursed??)

This I may be a bit fuzzy on and may need some help.

Your comp status within LVH is based on a 4-trip averaging system...
with your play-per-3 day trip as its basis. So... if you happen to
be a $6K per day coin-in gambler... and you decide to play LVH for 1
day; you may get something for your gambling from a host. However,
since a trip is based on 3 days - your average for this trip will be
rated as $2K per day.

Hopefully that was clear enough for you...

Based on this description, even an afternoon visit to the Hilton is
considered a 3 day trip.

Is that correct? Is that also only for comp status as opposed to comps
received?

We've never stayed there but visited for an afternoon twice before, each
with about 4K of action.
I don't know our comp "status" but we've been receiving tons of marketing
comp including rooms, shows, and play.

Absolutely. Unlike many casinos who work off daily averages, LVH
rates players based upon a 3-day trip (irrespective of actual time
played). This drives your eligibility for up front comp status on
future trips and is a factor for other promotional mailings (the theo
of your play and other averages weigh in strongly on promos as well).

That trip average is built up over the course of your last 4 trips.
(Visits of longer than 3 days are pro-rated to determine a 3-day
equivalent -- e.g., 4-day trip action will be multiplied by 75%).

This is one casino where a new prospective player is better off not to
drop in for an afternoon's play to "get on their mailings". (Been
there, done that

Hopefully not to add to the confusion but then what sort of "accounts" do
station casinos have??
Here's the scenario.

We put in 18K into Sunset Station.
We received 18K points which can be used for purchasing items but not cash
back.
According to the host, who comped us room and food, we were comped according
to our play based on our theo of approx. $625.
We received about $200+ in comps for room and food.

So, it sounds like we didn't get any discretionary comps but all comps came
from our open comp account, right?

Do stations give our discretionary comps, if we didn't get them??

Thanks all - quite an interesting experience branching out from our
previously well understood coast casinos (where we got next to nothing
anyway...).

IMO (and the way I handle it in the vpFREE DataBase pages) you got a
discretionary comp at Sunset, and an "open comp account" is used by
casinos to administer discretionary comps.

From the FAQ:

*************

26. What are Comps? - They are complimentary or free goodies that casinos
give to their players as rewards for patronizing the casino. Examples are
free drinks, food, hotel rooms, shows, logo items etc.. Comps can be
classified into three general categories:

Earned Comps are comps that are generated from normal VP play in accordance
with the individual casino's established rules. They can be obtained from the
Player's Club, or by swiping your card at a point of usage, such as a food
outlet or gift shop.

Discretionary Comps are comps that aren't charged against a player's Earned
Comps, and usually come from a Slot Host(ess). Higher Rollers are the primary
beneficiaries of discretionary comps, but they're often available to Lower
Rollers also, just for the asking.

Marketing Comps are comps that come from a casino's Marketing Department, and
aren't charged against a player's Earned or Discretionary Comps.
