Long Live Skip Hughes

I am very sad. But- I learned a lot from him, met great people,
and have been consistently winning lots of $$$$ every year
playing video poker.

A few of Skip's wonderful quotes:

"Double Double Bonus the Devils Game,"

"We have met the enemy and the enemy is short pay"

and of course who can forget,

"I need a Royal"(T-shirts)

What a great legacy for doing what he loved.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm one of those who has known him for many years, from being a Skip Hughes list member. I'll remember him with a tear in my eye, but a smile on my face.

I became one of his get-together coordinators. In the old days, we got together a couple times per year. I worked behind the scenes with him panning out details of where to go, working with the casino of choice ( or whoever would have us) taking head counts, fielding questions etc.

Skip had a heart the size of Texas and was one of the best teachers I ever had. Skip thank you for the gift of knowledge to play my favorite games and for being the gentle, kind person that you were. I'll forever remember your sense of humor, wit, passion and what a good family man you were. I was always, still am, proud to say I was a Skip Hughes Group member.

My condolences, love and hugs to the Hughes family.

Lolly

Anyone still have their "SHG" pins? I still have mine somewhere in a
drawer.

I once asked Skip who was on his original Skip Hughes List. The following are from his email reply to me. I think it is appropriate to honor him by showing how his influence has grown since September 1997. Here are the original 20:

Wayne Fisch
Yuri Sorkin
Marland Stopel
Martin Veneroso
Bob cannon
Ton Sims
Dave Mcvay
Tom Robertson
Joe Chiles
Dale Whitehead
Henry Strouss
Greg Heim
Steve Latusek
Randy Hudson
Kris Hood
Huutti Kuosa
Barry Shiffrin
Shirley Slane
Terry Kell
Jazbo Burns

Skip went on to tell me that Shirley Slane dropped out after a week as she "could't keep up with all the messages". There had been an average of 5 a day!!

Hopefully Skip has found all the full pay that has gone to VP Heaven!

I still have my SHG pin and know exactly what drawer it is in. Those pins are rare and a collectors item. Not that many were made to begin with.

Just like all the rest of the posters, we were saddened by the death of Skip Hughes. We remember the get-to-gethers at various casinos. My husband never fails to wear his "I need a Royal" t-shirt when we are in Las Vegas (not that it has worked for him). We learned a lot about video poker reading his monthly newsletters. The entire video poker community will miss him.

Skip will be missed.
If I am not mistaken he coined the term NSUD that even the Palms uses to describe machines not included in their promotions. TomSki

I have not posted for 19 months (my first post since Dec 2008 ), but not on-line for 18 1/2. I was over on an old regular board of mine Travel2Vegas.com and was commenting about NSUD. I knew there was a reference over here in the Links section and went looking for the historical reference for it.

I could not find it right away. That is when I discovered the information about Skip's death searching the posts. Skip gave me a membership on his site since he was using my material from the Laughlin regional at the time for his site. I even wrote a couple of Laughjin oriented articles for his newsletter.

But back to "Not So Ugly Deuces". That was and always will be his moniker! Go to the vpFREE Glossary and click on the hot link for NSUD. The original discussion was about the changing paytable at the Wynn from APDW to something less. "Ugly" came up.

Or you can go directly to August 25, 2005 and visit message #47,771 and hear from Skip himself. I am the guy called "Gray".
