Locking up machines WAS: Greedy Old Couple

That's just rude. I don't see why someone interested in a machine
can't politely ask a player if they're planning on leaving at some
point. It is literally "their business" if they'd like to play that
machine and want to plan their day in some reasonable fashion.

Play it for 100 hours if you want, but this haughty attitude over a
simple, reasonable question is just what gives some vp players a bad
name. Is there something wrong with simply smiling and saying "I'll
probably be here for quite a while"? I guess for some people, acting
like an ass is just part of the "experience".

I agree with this one - first of all, if they say they plan to play for another ten hours, I'll know not to hang out, and secondly, if they say they plan to quit in 30 min., I'll know to stay close. Secondly, I think we all need to work together to take turns "in order" - if I tell them "I'll be playing over here" (and I'm in easy sight) and "could you put me down as first after you're done", they can verify to someone else who's waiting that I asked first, and if that person asks when they'll be done, they can say, soon, but someone is ahead of you on the waiting list.

This just seems fair -- now it might get more grey and less black and white if I don't hang out close to the machines - the "outgoing" players shouldn't have to find me when they're done unless I'm in sight, and those besides me who are waiting shouldn't have to sit around because I "signed up" ahead of them, if I'm not there when it's my turn.

This all seems pretty fair to me, and reasonable.

I agree with others about those who "lock up" a machine while they go to sleep or to eat, unless it's ten minutes or so -- in a poker game, if seats are at a premium, and someone goes away for an hour for a meal (permitted), another player can "play over" and take the unused seat until that person gets back. I would be more than happy to take my 30 min. or two hours or whatever time slot is being "held" while the person is gone, and give it back when they return -- and the casino should WANT such an arrangement and support it, if it needs "policing" to work.

I can't imagine why anyone would object to such an arrangement.

Finally, to those who say "if you're going to play like a pro, act like a pro" - seems like the pro's do NOT want them to play with strategy cards in plain sight, but DO want them to give up their machines when asked -- which of those two behaviors is not acceptable to pro's? Seems like, if you object to the cards, saying it's unprofessional, you need to recognize that the pro behavior seems to be to play and not give up a hard-earned seat at the machine - but some seem to want to have it both ways.
