Living in Las Vegas (loathing deleted)

Dennis: Notwithstanding the fact that you just might be a little different
than others who move to LV in that you believe in miracles (per the web site
you led us to), I do know a lot of people living in Nevada are held deeply
within the grip of video poker. Maybe not everyone--but many who do play it
regularly. And it is a position that virtually no one will come out and
publicly admit when they talk about themselves....as we know. It's a bad image.
It's a bad feeling. I really don't blame them. I'm not sure a lack of security
in one's own being is an excuse for an addiction though. People who gamble in
LV are up against an extreme power.

"I DO disagree, and have happily lived here for 23 years.
If ANYTHING can "take over your life" it is because you lack security in your own BEing, and are seeking answers outside yourself, which can never be found."

I'll agree with you here Rob. The casinos are literally psycological
machines set up to get patrons to enter into a disassociative state.
And when they do their minds operate in a alpha state of awareness.
This is the predominate state of those 8 years old and younger.
While in this state the mind is highly susceptable to suggestion and
neurological programing. this state is noticable by the casino
zombie stare that most people get after a few hours under the
casinos psycological brow beating. This disassociative state can
also be brought about by having two different messages (sounds)
playing one in each ear at the same time. this can cause the
concious mind to quite literally shut down after only a few minutes.

Just think of a kid in a candy store with daddys wallet. and
daddys passed out drunk in some gutter some where. the kiddies have
no adult supervision and are unable to make rational decisions. As a
result they eat all the candy the can hold and end up sick. Why do
you think the casinos are marketing heavily to the younger *hip*
crowd. these young adults dont have the level of maturation a 40 old
does and have already shown themselves to be highly suseptable to
peer pressure. They have literally been conditioned to be
predominently alpha trainable by various components of the media and
advertisements in fact even by their school sytstems. These types
are extreamly easy marks for the casinos and I truly fear for them
in these respects.

There However are simple ways to force the brain into a theta state
which has all the benefits of an alpha state but still enjoys the
filters and rational desision making processes of the mature calm
focusable adult mind. Zazen or seated meditation is a great way to
train the mind to stay in this state and resist alpha wave intrusion
and programming. It is called Calm Conditioning. another simple way
is to wear a rubber band on your wrist and pop it every 5 minutes or
so after first entering a casino. Or better yet set up a ramdom
signal to remind you to pop it. another is to take 10 or so minutes
prior to entering the casino fray to condition ones self to the
casinos unnatural environments while reminding oneself that this is
just that. you can use a key trigger word such as circus or
carnivale to bring about this adult *associative* state rather than
the adolesent *disassociative* one. you can use this trigger word
when you pop the rubber band on your wrist to trigger a similar
behaviour. Another is to simple make a plan and have it firmly fixed
in your mind prior to entering the casinos artificial environs.
Another is to limit casino visits (session if you will) to two hours
or less. After two Hours you must get up cash out document your
results and leave the casino area for a hour or so. Then do somthing
to get your mind into a theta state (calm relaxed but able to make
critical desisions in a clear manner) the best way I know is to do a
crossword or logic puzzle then take a few minutes to fully relax and
do some meditation exersizes.

I could go on and on on this topic. but I wont at this time.
Just being mindfull of the casinos psycological ploys and the
effects those ploys have on *everyone* will go far in helping you
recognize when they are wearing on you. Because they are every
minute you under the casino lights.

Hay, I will publicly admit I like playing video poker, in fact I LOVE
playing VP. I figure it's my money, its my life, and of no business
or consequence to anyone else. If we lived in Las Vegas (or Reno or
anyplace else that had lots of casinos) we would probably play every
day. Call me obsessive, addicted, nuts, or whatever jerks your chain
-- I don't give a crap. I put in my years in the work force, earned
my retirement, and will do whatever I want for the rest of my years.
And what I want is to play video poker among other things. We don't
have to answer to anyone and if we spend our kids inheritance, so
what. It's our money, we earned it. It's our time, we earned it.

After that tirade, let me add we are also several thousand $ ahead of
the game.
