These numbers are worth commenting on. Some players are drawn to
pick'em in part because of a significant reduction in variance
relative to JB (and other games) when played full coin.
However, the roughly 2% contribution to return in most games
(vs. .3%
for PE) figures very strongly in variance. Obviously when it
comes to
the large majority of play hours, the royal isn't an influence on
the
experienced volatility. In those cases, the removal of the royal
has
a much greater influence on the non-PE games (reflected also in the
much larger short coin PE variance you note).
There are many neophyte PE players who are stunned by the loss
exposure presented by PE in the short-term vs. other games and
it's a
consideration that's infrequently noted in addition the variance
factor.

Harry,
The thing that I've noticed most about playing Pick'Em over other
vp games (and this will drive you nuts if you let it)is that in
games like JB, DW, DB, etc., you will win or push (tie) sometimes as
many as ten hands or more in a row before losing your bet. And this
will happen a lot during a typical 4 hour playing session. In
Pick'Em, a three or four hand in a row winning streak is about as
much as you will ever see. And also in P'E, a losing run of 10, 15,
or even 20 hands in a row is not uncommon.
Once, early in my P'E playing days, when I first discovered them
at the newly built Windsor Casino and elsewhere, I was playing a
dollar machine and hit two quads in a short time period. I was up
over $2,000 and said to VP Pappy, "This game is easy. We're going to
make a fortune playing it!"
Five hours later, I not only lost the two grand, but another $500
besides before calling it quits. Of course nowadays, I'd walk after
the first quad and call it a day.
I still play it today, but now I set win/loss limits so I don't
get killed as much in any short time span.
