Laughlin Notes: Chili Dogs, Shrimps and other snack bar foods

It is time we compared notes to find the best value from the Laughlin/Casino
Drive joints for the lowest level of decent/tasty food. I am sure some of you
won't admit to even snagging a burger or a slice. But I find it necessary
almost every trip to get rid of that dull headache.

So I discovered that the McDonalds in EW once again eliminated their dollar
menu on last visit. A double cheeseburger could get me to the next meal
period. The AQ's Burger King had Junior Whoppers for a cheap price too, but i have
not been down there in awhile.

Shrimp Cocktails- I have not done one in awhile. I used to do the Pioneer's
all the time with any purchase.

Hot Dogs/Chili Dogs- The beer/dog coupon from the Riverside got me going
years ago. Let's see that was in the north casino, then by the pit/windows.
They still do that one somewhere? Maybe upstairs by the bowling alley?

This last trip confirmed that the River Palms/Java Joe's Chili Dog is the
standard to be compared to anyone else on the river or southern Nevada. You do
need a beer to wash down a properly ganished dog. Snag one from the Parrot's
Bay bar with a buy-in. I will go as far as to say a Java Joe's chili dog
should be a standard like a Golden Gate shrimp cocktail.

Once again this dog was bathed in Otega branded chili from a special
dispensor. No beans allowed. Once again I could add my own condiments from a
self-serve tray. No cutbacks yet-chopped yellow onions, grated cheddar chesse and
thinly sliced jalepeno peppers...hot dog!

My contrast dog two days later was from the snack bar from the Pioneer. I
got it TO-GO. The chili was homemade with pinto beans, beans do not belong on a
chili dog I decided.

I wrote down the prices from only two joints. The Java Joes price was $2.25
for a hot dog and $2.50 for a chili dog (with add your own condiments).

I also stood at the Colorado Belle snack bar and stared at the overhead menu
before they opened. Hot Dog-$2.75, with cheese $3.00, with chili $3.25, and
a chili/cheese dog $4.00. Someone has to explain this one to me?

This needs to be investigated. So does anyone have an insight to any
snackbar and their best deal?

I like the hotdogs at Trop Deli under the Stairs cafe. ($2.75, with
shredded cheese and onions if you like). No more chili, though.

HOWEVER, they are only a buck ($1) during MNF WITH CHILI,
and there are also popcorn/nachos & cheese/ beer specials...Caboose
lounge.

For my money, the best low level decent tasty food is served across Casino Drive at the In-
N-Out. Albuquerque, which has nearly every fast food and chain restaurant known to exist,
is not so blessed as to have an In-N-Out. I have been known to grab breakfast in the
Harrah's McD's and scarf it at a machine, just like I'm in the El Cortez. I don't think they have
a dollar menu, either. I generally shun food from the River Palms, but I have it on my list to
hit the hot dog cart at some point. I hear the GN snack bar has changed operators and that
the quality has suffered, but I felt my recent club sandwich and macaroni salad was a good
way to burn the last of my comps from the Landry's.
