It hasn't changed (well, the casino has been remodeled) but it isn't
scary. At least it doesn't scare me (there is one 70 year old
cocktail waitress that is a little scary) and I've been going there
for 10 years.

It underwent a facelift a couple of years ago and even though it's
located by itself in a rather seedy area, once you're actually in the
place I'd say you're reasonably safe. If you have a car, just use
valet parking and thereby avoid the somewhat cramped and dingy
parking garage. BTW, the latest issue of "Casino Player" has a nice
piece by Jeffrey Compton about the El Cortez and its history. I
suppose many here know that Jackie Gaughan has been the owner for
decades, but I wonder how many would be as surprised as I was to
learn that the original founder was none other then Bugsy Siegel.

I stay there regularly. No problems except that darn DW progressive
($50K+ in Dec after $30K in June) never hits :). The extra block to
the Western is the real issue - yikes! Not for $7-$10 a night for
sure.
