Las Vegas TV Show

I have heard via the "grapevine" that, on next Monday night's show (March 1)
in the series "Las Vegas," part of the action is a "King and Queen of
Coupons" running around town. I'm not sure if someone saw a trailer or a
synopsis of the show that mentioned this or just how this was found out - or
even if it is indeed valid information.

Anyway, because this show is big on getting things wrong, i.e. about
gambling facts, casino procedures, and general facts about Las Vegas in
general, I want to make clear in advance that I was not consulted about
this. I don't know if this was just an original bright idea of a TV writer
or if someone had heard of my exploits as the Queen of Kupon in Vegas. In
any case, if this subject is part of the plot, we will find it very
interesting to watch - and play our usual game of seeing how many things
about gambling and Vegas this program can get wrong in one hour!!!!

I think we have all realized by now that this show is
a comedy based in a fantasy that has little to do with
Vegas except for the name. The valet will be fixing
the computers at the big B in the morning.

Jean,

There's a rumor on the Las Vegas Advisor message board that you'll be
in the show. It is posted in the Las Vegas (General) section of the
message forums titled Las Vegas TV Show. No harm in it so don't be
alarmed - just good clean fun about people wondering if you'd be the
one running around town with coupons.

Thought you may want to take a look.

Jean, I knew you were known as the Queen of Comps (and accordingly you use and recommend coupons associated with casinos and gambling), but I wasn't aware that you are also known by the additional name -- "Queen of Kupon". If that name is associated with you widely enough, and if the Las Vegas series creates any problem of people associating that show with you, you might want to consult an attorney about establishing your commercial rights to that trade name. I don't practice in that field, so I wouldn't venture to give you any advice or make predictions, but you should at least understand that it might be very plausible for you to establish the exclusive right to the use of that moniker at least within the confines of the gambling industry and any businesses related to it. You might be surprised at how far your rights might extend; not long ago I recall reading about a dispute between Kelloggs and Exxon over their respective uses of "Tony the Tiger" and the slogan: "Put a tiger in your tank." I don't recall the outcome, but the very idea that this would even be considered a legitimate dispute mystified me because I have trouble seeing how the product/markets for gasoline and cereal are similar enough that this would have been viewed as a problem in the first place.

Good luck.

<<but I

The LVA dubbed me Queen of Kupon many years before Dan Rather, when we were on 48 Hours, called me Queen of Comps. I am called both now - although Queen of Comps is used most often.

Many people have raised the legality issue - I guess we will have to see what the show actually portrays. I haven't copyrighted either name. I'm not into litigation much; I have a sister who is an attorney. Sometimes just a letter from her would be all I need to stop some funny stuff. Actually I just personally wrote to the people who have the URL thefrugalgambler.com - at one time they had a picture on the site of my first book, with a link to amazon.com. - but they were mainly an online casino promotional site. I informed them that this was the title of a book which was copyrighted - they have since gone to a blank site.

Let's look at this optimistically. Maybe the show will remind people of me and push book sales???

Just so you will know, if you decide to look into this further, the protection that you will be seeking will be a "word mark", which is similar to a trademark and the protection it receives. I did a quick search on the US Patent & Trademark site -- use this link:
http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=85pf2k.1.1 -- and couldn't find where "Queen of Coupon(s)" has been registered by anyone. You should speak to your sister about this, regardless of what happens with Las Vegas TV Show, because I can't see where you have ever registered "Frugal Gambler", either. Of course, you might be satisfied with just the copyright protection you have, and many people would find that sufficient.
