Las Vegas trip stays at Palms, M, Stratosphere, Silverton

I'm not much for trip reports so I'll make this as brief as I can:

Palms: stayed during the lingerie night promotion. My host coded me for the promo. Didn't know what it was but it had $50 of FP plus tickets to event. Asked them to change it to another promo that had $250 FP which they did. While playing, saw all these people coming in barely dressed in lingerie (mostly women), must have been a parade of a couple hundred for an hour. Realized then that the event was for locals & it must have been some sort of best costume contest. A friend of mine said he would have taken the tickets.

M Resort: first time to stay here & it won't be the last. Definitely like the rooms & the buffet. I'm not much for buffets but I do like this one. The owners of the M were the ones who built & owned the Rio so the excellent buffet is a throwback to the glory days of the Rio. The rooms are European-style. Room key needs to be inserted in order for lights to work. Bathroom mirror has a section which is actually a TV so you don't miss your favorite programs. My room made great use of natural lighting.

Stratosphere: usually stay in a suite but didn't want to wait for one to be ready so I think I was put in some sort of semi-suite. One thing I like about staying here is they always stock the refrigerator with water & soft drinks. (One time the room had a full-size refrigerator -- no it wasn't full of stuff, just drinks.) $250 FP

Silverton: this is my "home" casino as I used 2 offers for a 4-day stay & $600 FP. Standard room & not much to report except that they seem to be doing well.

During Palms stay, talked to front desk person who said she was working only 1 day/week. Said she wouldn't make it if she wasn't married. During rest of trip talked to other employees & found out that many were working short hrs & even with 2 jobs, they didn't have 40 hrs. Nevada's unemployment rate is 15% but with underemployment in Las Vegas, the people I talked to think it's closer to 20% in LV.

I've cut back on my LV trips in the last 2 yrs so this was an unusually long one for me. Part of it was to help family with show tickets & meals but I was in for a nasty surprise when I tried to get show tickets during the week. A couple of years ago, it was no problem to get weekday tickets to many shows. Now many of those shows are performing only on weekends. It's like a lot of the restaurants are also open on weekends -- Fri-Sat, many on short hrs on Sun.

Gambling: nothing to add to database, except that I think all the positive machines are gone from Statosphere. At the last minute, I did get into a $10K BJ tournament at the El Cortez. Don't know if I've reported on EC before but it's not the EC of 10 yrs ago where I was wary of going there. They've cleaned the area up & have more security. Have only stayed there once (in a nice retro suite) & have to say that I should have listened to Babe a long time ago. Although my gambling hasn't been positive, my feelings about EC are. If you look at last week's issue of Gaming Today, you'll see a good reason for avoiding slots on the Strip -- slot holds have gone up significantly on the Strip.

In general: haven't stayed on the Strip for over a yr now & the new casinos, M & South Point are 2 good reasons not to. You avoid the congestion & have a better overall experience. The one exception that I'll make is the Wynn. With Ritz-Carlton gone, it now has the best service levels in LV.

Just got back from a 4 night stay with little luck on the gambling and dining side.
Thursday Night: Fly in on SWA and arrive at 10pm. SWA was on-time and the shuttle from the airport was only a 10 minute wait for once. Arrived at the HRH and immediately asked if i needed to sign-up for the play and swipe promo. I didn't, but it was 1045pm and I had to garner 750 credits in one hour. I sat down at the new 10 play 8/5 bonus machine and quickly was up 120.00. After getting a quick 800 points I swiped my card 5 times and got four 5 dollar free play tickets and one 3 dollar ticket. This was a small play but definitely a positive one.
Checked in at harrah's for the night and since it was my first appearance there, but put in a real nice room with a jacuzzi tub and marble bathroom. I going to give them some play since my former HRH host Katy Kindsfather is now there.
Friday : Use a coupon for a twofer at KGB, the new Kerry Simon burger joint. The burger I order medium came back extremely well done. I ate it since my waitress didn't speak very good English.
Review: 0 Forks
After that fiasco, sat down at the 7/5 bonus dreamcard machine in the poker palace and got hammered for 670.00. The cashier was nice and said, "That's a nice ticket". Of course I told her i started out with 1k. Took a cab to the HRH and checked in to a room with a pool view in the casino tower. Sat down at the 8/5bonus ten play and struggled for 2 hours with a loss of 250, which also included my 50 in free play. Sat next to "Kris", one of the monster HRH players who was pounding the 20 line spin poker machine next to me. He was playing pNSUD and after 8 hours had well over 50k points. He was there for a free blackjack tourney whick was invite only. To qualify you needed a theo loss of 4k per trip. To qualify for the bonus blackjack tourney on Sunday you needed a theo loss of 12.5 for the weekend. Friday night went over to Southpoint with a friend and met his cocktail waitress friend and drank for free for two hours. My friend went to the blackjack table with his co-worker and after 20 minutes at the 5 dollar table asked for a comp to the deli. Got turned down, but after some pleading from his hot assistant who is a player there, got us two comps for the buffet. Review: 4 forks for Seafood buffet.
Saturday: Played in the High Limit room on the spin poker 25cent machine and broke even. Unfortunately my new friend Kris decided to leave the 100 play 8/5 bonus machine next to me. I sat down and started playing bonus poker deluxe. After realizing I was playing the wrong game, switched to 8/5 bonus with no luck. I decided to only play 8 lines, but had no luck other than a couple of 4 of a kinds. Net loss: 360.
Sunday: Sat out at the new pool area at the HRH and loved it. Much quieter than the Rehab side. Used my 40 dollar free food ticket for a ribeye at AGO. Review: 4 forks. Also Sunday I saw my first million dollar player. He had one million dollars in 1k chips on a blackjack table in the high-limit room. Only saw him at the table once during the day. It looked like his average bet was 7k. I didn't recognize him, but looked like Emminem, but only a lot taller.
Monday: SWA took me back to San Jose on time and I was able to get my son from his first day of school at 3pm.

Keep on rockin

On Katy Kindsfather:

Oh, she's at Harrah's. That's why I'm getting almost daily Harrah's
spam at the email address I gave to HR.

I would like to see what 1000 1K cheques look like on a table. Was there any room for the cards to be dealt?

The chips went from one end of the table to the other. They were stacked 10 high 3 rows deep plus there were 3 trays of chips also on the table. So probably there were more than a million on the table now that I think about it. He acted really nervous for a guy with that kind of money. He was only about 28 years old.

Katy is at Planet Hollywood which is owned by Harrah's. I hope since she is my host, she get's credit for my play at Harrah's. The only reason I was at harrah's was because of the DREAMCARD video poker game.

If they were banannas, it'd take 50 stacks of 20 chips to make 1mil..50 stacks of regular size chips would take up a LOT of space...if you look at the bank at a crap table, they stack them in 20 high, so, I'd guess they have 50 stacks of chips back there (maybe a little more)

The table was guarded by one and sometimes two security guards. I'm sure there was more than 50 stacks of chips there. There was also 3 trays of banana chips also.

I was playing at the BJ table next to this one. It was truly a sight to behold with basically the entire player's area filled with banana chips. There were around 100 stacks of yellow and the dealers were claiming the "big player" had ~1.5 million on the table.

I thought that $1k chips were called pumpkins because they are orange and not "perfectly rounded" ?

From Wikipedia:

"Chips are also available in larger denominations of $1,000 or more, depending on the wagering limits of the casino. Such chips are often yellow or orange and of a large size. Casinos in Nevada, Atlantic City, and other areas that permit high wagers typically have chips available in $5,000, $10,000, $25,000, and higher denominations; the colors for these vary widely.

Denominations above $5,000 are almost never encountered by the general public; their use is usually limited to "high limit rooms" where bet sizes are much larger than on the main floor. Casinos often use gaming plaques for these higher denominations- these plaques are about the size of a playing card, and must be marked with serial numbers <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_number>. The largest value placed on a plaque to date is $10 million, used at the London Club in Las Vegas.^[3] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_token#cite_note-2>
