I've read the last weeks posts about Las Vegas with interest. The
opinions are all over the map between residents and between
visitors. My wife and I have made 26 trips to your city and will in
Sept, make our 27th. We have tasted the good old days and
experienced the not so good new days but as visitors in our 70's,
the adrenalin rush we get walking up to the baggage claim area never
changes. So the VP is a tougher game, blackjack pays 6/5 and the
slots can baffle your senses as they siphon your cash. $1.99 steak
and eggs have given way to $25.00 dinner buffets, cabs cost more
than rent a cars etc etc. But - The whole question to me is are
we still having fun. I would shout from the Big Shot at the strat
that I am "still" having fun. (Not that I would go near that thing
at my age)
To us Vegas is a temporary escape from other things. For some
permanent residents, you might need as escape from your escape.
Others seem to be living the life they want and are having fun.
Like the writer from Canada said, there's more to life than VP (or
anything that comsumes you to excess) Things change but we can
adjust and still find fun everywhere if we try to look.
For almost all of our 45 years of married life, my wife has kept
a diary. One of our happiest times are re-reading the Vegas trips.
the wins, the losses, The hikes to the Sands for free cups, our foot
long hot dogs in the Dunes Oasis, seeing the Forum statue show for
the first time, etc. All golden memories.
Sorry to sound like a lecture but I just wanted to share my
enthusiasm for a town that still has a lot to give and will have for
a long time to come.
