Las Vegas Hotel?

We used to spend lots of time in vegas, but havent been back
for a couple years. My play was usually dueces at the Hilton
and Palms. I see the Hilton is now the LasVegas Hotel...are
the same machines still in the sports book? Is there still
any full pay Jacks or Double Bonus anywhere? Thanks for any help.

Yes, the same video poker machines are in the sports book. There are some 9/6 Jacks, but I don't think there are any 10/7 DB. Check the vpFREE2 website for details.

I will be there this weekend for the first time in a year or so. Hopefully all the full pay machines are there. I also hope that they have improved the quality of the screens, the machines often look like they are from the 90s and haven't been upgraded.

No longer. The Hilton affiliation has ended, thus the "rename".

What do you believe the "H" stands for? Or do you think it's like
asking what the "S" in Harry Truman's middle name stood for?

I was just there the other night, 9pm on a Tuesday. Place was an absolute ghost town. Their new sign looks pathetic, 3 large letters with the outline of the old lettering still visible. The room rates, especially for the nicer suites, are ridiculous, for a property so far off the beaten path.

The sports book VP inventory is still there, at least the deuces wild machines, and the machines are super old. I had a good time playing loose deuces but felt at any time I could be mugged inside the casino. The place was so dead. I mean it was worse than the Riviera where I was staying, and that place is a graveyard.

These places should be lettings folks book some of the fancy suites for peanuts or offering free buffets to anyone who walks in the door. They're simply not going to survive against all the action at center strip.

Yes. Where did you find that their new name was the "Las Vegas
Hotel?" Their Web site still says they're the "LVH – Las Vegas Hotel
& Casino." My mailer says that. My question remains. I know as
little as possible about the deal between the owners and the Hilton,
but my theory is that they agreed to retain the "LVH" as something
that would maintain continuity with the Hilton in the perception of
customers.

Shouldn't this be XVP by now? Who started this ridiculous discussion
about a letter?

I don't think so! Their Web site is http://www.thelvh.com/. Nowhere
do I see "(below "Las Vegas Hotel & Casino") it states: "Formerly Las
Vegas Hilton." I see that it says that below "LVH – Las Vegas Hotel &

Hmm, interesting. H is for hotel and Im assuming they kept the 3 letters the same to make the change over easier. The monogram on many items can be kept the same and I doubt the Hilton has a trademark on the the 3 letters as they can mean anything, but who knows? The gf and I go once a week because she love's Benihana. The sports book machines are still there but there are some random machines scattered around that have 8/5 BP, 9/7 DB and 9/6 DDB. They just installed a few flat screen machines with these pay tables. the other machines are still older than dirt. Im not sure if the scattered machines have any good deuces, I dont play the game often so I dont may it point to check that game. Also, the place is a ghost town during the weekday nights its a little spooky by the sports book

They did the same thing here in AC. The old Atlantic city Hilton was changed to just "ACH". Then several months later it was completely changed to "The Atlantic Club". All happened around the same time LVH made their changes. Guess the Hilton brand doesn't want casinos anymore.

Of course, Hilton hasn't had ownership of either the LV or AC properties since their gaming division was spun off into what would be come Park Place Entertainment (with the merger with Bally Entertainment), around 1998.

The Hilton name has continued to be associated with the properties through a franchise agreement (which was extended 3 years at a time). Parties are close lipped as to why the franchise agreement wasn't renewed last year (for either property), but I speculate it had something to do with the cash-strapped position of Colony Capital (or the subsequent receiver for ACH).

Harry is absolutely right, although I believe he meant "The Hilton name HAD continued to be associated....through a franchise agreement...".

A person in management at the LVH told us that since the loss of the association with the Hilton, they have lost 30% of room bookings due to no longer being part of the Hilton's cross marketing.

To address issues brought up by other folks:

I feel safe in the race and sports book, even late at night, when there aren't many people there, because the bank of full-pay machines is directly in front of a (usually manned) security podium. Also, there is a security guard (with a gun) at the exit doors. The security there is vigilant. For example, there is now a "Fan Cave" in the sports book which has big comfortable chairs, large screen TVs, and is nonsmoking. My husband goes in there to watch golf while I play VP. He routinely gets hassled by the security guards- "Sir, you can't sleep in here!", and he is a fat old white man who does not look like a bum. I, and others, used to get immediate attention from security back when one was prohibited from using cell phones in sports books.

I would like to caution folks who want to play the quarter full pay machines in the sports book to be careful to check the paytables. Only two rows have the good paytables. There are a bunch of machines that look identical.

I feel guilty, because I need to be a good citizen and update VPFree2. There have been a lot of changes in the inventory on the main floor. And, the slot high limit "Elvis" room has been changed to a slot tournament area. I used to play 8/5 5 play Bonus poker in there. They moved the machines to the main floor and downgraded the paytables. They are still moving stuff around.

They put in a bunch of virtual dealer blackjack machines (6/5, please don`t play these!) right by the pit. Not a morale booster for the real dealers, I would think. Also, they did away with the famous annual $100,000 BJ tournament. The monthly $30K slot tournament, as well as the occasional table game tourneys, are gone as well. The Thursday night drawing, there for years, has been discontinued.

That being said, there is some positive stuff about the LVH. The new marketing director is attempting some new promotions, and seems to be trying to attract locals with better mailers.

Also, in some ways, the LVH has continued to be a good deal. They give generous comp dollars, and free play on top of that. For locals, a great deal is the very good buffet. Pay with your comp dollars, and Sun-Thurs it is $2 for breakfast, $4 for lunch, $5 for dinner, and $7 for brunch. Since locals get 25% off for anything (restaurants, shops, rooms, show tickets) purchased at the LVH, you will often get 25% off on top of that, depending on the cashier.

No, neither the wonderful Misscraps nor I work for the LVH! I just hope the place survives.

You're absolutely right about the security guard. I saw him of course but I suppose it didn't register. There is no safety issue in the sports book when deserted.

I am still ticked off though about LVH quoting me $1095 to stay in one of those balcony 29th floor suites, on a dead Tuesday night in August. I'm quite sure most of them were empty.

I ended up in a one bedroom balcony suite at the Riviera overlooking the pool. It was right out of 1975, all original bathroom fixtures and furniture. It was pretty neat.

LVH-The Las Vegas Hotel has to be a name recognition thing. They'll probably eventually drop the LVH. You know, like when a certain singer wanted to go back to his real name he went from John Cougar to John Cougar Mellencamp, and eventually to John Mellencamp, or however you spell it.

If you watch women's pool on ESPN like I do, when Eva Mataya, the striking viking, got married, she went to Eva Mataya Laurence, then to Eva Laurence. I don't blame her for wanting to get rid of the Mataya moniker. She went legitimate but Jimmie Mataya is just a straight up pool hustler. "To hell with tournaments, let's just freeze up $10,000 and roll it off." He would even put ads in Newpapers and magazines looking for action. Of course you know he's always gonna pick his spots.

Alison Fisher is the best of the women. But Jeanette Lee has a gorgeous stroke....among other things.
