Labor Day Trip

I'm new to VP and play nickels/quarters, but wondered if anyone else
has noticed that your return is better in the non-smoking areas?

I was in Laughlin on a business trip, so only played a few hours at
each casino.

Colorado Belle - no luck on the main floor, but went up to the
non-smoking area next to Paddlewheel Restaurant and got a nice 4oK w/
kicker.

Edgewater - no luck here

Ramada Express - the non-smoking area was fun to play. Enough wins to
stay in play and break even for the night. I think this could have
been a good night if I could have played longer.

Any suggestions on what other casinos to try? I'll be back in
November on another business trip.

Hi Leland, and welcome to the Laughlin vpFREE board.

In video poker, your expected return is contingent on the paytables for
the particular vp game you're playing. Some paytables are much better
than others, which is why game choice is an important part of any
effort to improve your chances of being a winner and lessen the casino
edge. You may be lucky on machines in non-smoking areas, but a machine
with an identical paytable in any other part of the casino should
provide a similar return in the long term. Linda Boyd's book "The
Video Poker Edge" is an excellent read for a beginner, and I recommend
it for you.

Agreed, with one minor comment. Because many gamblers are smokers, you
may find more VP machines available in non-smoking rooms.

One casino that has very poor VP in their non-smoking area is
Riverside. I have no idea why those paytables are/were set so poorly.

River Palms non-smoking area had good machines (I think I've heard
that room is no longer non-smoking, but it's been awhile since I've
been there), but wasn't part of the ongoing "Winner's Wharf"
promotion. Non-smokers either went to Winners Wharf or lost out on the
promotion.
