I am wondering how the Las Vegas monorail project is coming along.
Should be darn near completed by now. Does anyone know what the fare

It is getting very near. Officially, they are still saying 1st qtr 2004 but I read an article in the paper not too long ago that they were running ahead of schedule and might even open before the Holidays. I haven't seen anything about the fare. You can see their web site at www.lvmonorail.com

I hate the monorail more than life itself. This is possibly one of
the most stupid projects this city has ever embarked on. I know the
company who built is is footing the bill. I sure tens of thousands
of visitors in this town when they get off the plane say is there
an easy way to get to the "Flea Joint" Sahara Hotel.
Do you know by the time it takes to get to the Monorail in back of
Bally's you could walk 1/2 way down the strip. When the Monorail is
extended to the airport I'm sure people will want to lug bags from
that monorail exit to the front of Bally's where hotel registration
is. Ditto for the MGM exit. The only practical construction of the
monorail would have been down the center of Las Vegas Blvd with
moving walkways connected to the front of the hotels.
I read that to recoup the $500 million cost the monorail would have
to be used by millions of passengers a year for a fare that is about
the same as a bus ride. The only real practical purpose of the thing
is if you want to get to the Las Vegas Hilton so maybe conventioneers
will use instead of the free hotel shuttles that the conventions
provide which exit much, much closer to the hotels. If you want to
go to the Stardust, La Reve, Frontier, Circus Circus, Riviera your
out of luck.
What the monorail has done is create traffic havoc on surface streets
during construction. Made it a real headache to get to the Venetian
and Harrahs parking garage. Oh by the way they haven't even ripped
up Koval yet. That will be fun when trying to get onto Twain during
rush hour.
