Advise your friend to write a letter to the top officer in the bank. The
bank manager could have been the one responsible for the theft. The letter will
alert the bank to keep an eye on the branch maybe even make some fake cash
deposits themselves. If they're caught raiding the cookie jar, they'll come back
to her.
In any event, this is a good reason to never deposit cash in an ATM.

Depositing cash in an ATM is definitely not a good idea.
I have a friend who was fortunate enough to hit 2 $1 royals in a
single day, and managed to take a good part of it home with her. She
was nervous holding that much cash overnight and deposited over $4000
in the ATM at her local branch (it was a Sunday night).
When she got her next bank statement, the statement indicated only
$2000 had been deposited. She called the bank manager to try to
clear up the misunderstanding and was treated as if she were a liar
and potential thief. The manager was condescending and wouldn't
believe my friend's story.
My friend has a very responsible job and didn't want to advertise the
fact that she gambles in casinos, so she didn't pursue the issue past
talking to the bank officials. She was too embarrassed to involve
the authorities.
Someone at her bank took advantage of her and she had (in her mind)
no recourse.
I am curious if any other people have any stories that relate to this
one.
