Returned from LV with the same results as the past 20 years......NO ROYAL
I've been going to LV for 27 years and playing video poker the right way for
the past 20. We usually go to Vegas at least twice a year. I've got WinPoker
and practice till I can play Dueces pretty close to 100% accurate.
I've hit the 4 Ducks about 10 times now.
The only Royal I ever got was on the Texas Holdem video poker machines that
the Horseshoe had. Went back the next year and they had taken these out of
circulation. It was an easy game to beat in my opinion.
Perhaps my lack of good luck stems from my superstition of always peeing in
the number 3 or 5 urinal. "Stems from the old 3-5 joke".
Well, this year I tried number 1 urinal to no avail as well as number 2 and
4. Same Results.
In fairness I only played Dueces Wild at the Palms for about 7 hours total
this time. Played at Main Street another hour or so.
Oh well, I'm looking forward to returning in October. My wife has a
conference and I sure couldn't let her go alone. LOL.
Just Venting!

Brad: I feel your pain. I went through a streach of over 250,000
hands of 9/6 job and fpdw over 2 1/2 years without a royal. I was
finally delt a royal at MSS 9/6 job bar top back in March. Since
the stats say your due to hit a royal every 40,000 hands or so I knew
I was long overdue.
Hang in there and you will hit it.

Sounds like 96,000 hands. Yet Joe played 2.604 times as many hands
between Royals. The Royal drought can be brutal.
Now for the experts. The Royal every 40,000 hands belief. What
sample is this really based on? 1,000,000 hands? 10,000,000 hands?
100,000,000 hands? Infinity?

Accounts of going without a royal for days, weeks, months, years, etc.
don't mean a whole lot without information as to the actual amount of
play. Is eight hours of play a typical trip? If so, getting a royal
would be a lot more unusual than not getting one.

With a royal 'cycle' of 40,000 hands, in a million hands the average
number of royals is 25 with a SD of plus or minus 5. In 10 million
hands the average number of royals is 250 with a SD of plus or minus 15.8.

Thanks for the information. Someone else had responded with "simple
math"; basically not a useful answer. In your response, I am
guessing "SD" is standard deviation?
So I will ask the software vendors; do programs have the ability to
simulate 100,000,000 hands played? If so, what amount of time is
required for the software to complete such a simulation? It's pure
curiousity, as I know I (or maybe everyone) will not play that many
hands on a real machine.

On the Frugal Video Poker program, you can simulate 10,000,000 at one time. I'm not sure how long this will take - I think it depends on the speed of your computer. However, this can be going on in the background while you use other functions.

Here is the simple answer: The Royal Cycle is the reciprocal of the
probability of getting a Royal on any one hand. In Jacks or Better,
the probability of getting a Royal on your next hand is approximately
1/40,000, so the "Royal Cycle" is 40,000 hands.
Interestingly, the lowest possible Royal Cycle achievable for a 52
card deck on a standard video draw poker game is about one Royal for
every 23,000 hands. This number assumes that the player tries for a
Royal every single hand. This would include such plays as holding
Ten only from a hand like 3 3 3 3 T, or drawing five new cards for a
hand like 8 7 6 5 4 suited. Royals are hard to get!!

Yes, if you want to have some fun set up winpoker with a RF value of
115500 and everything else zero. The payback is just over 100%. Play
the game and you will see all the situations like EE brought up.

Of course, it's not necessary to force the ER to 100% to see EE's
plays -- any RF value (incl 1) will do, so long as all other values
are set to 0.
The "Go for the Royal" strategy is the easiest one to master.

Thanks for the response. 10,000,000 hands is a lot of hands. Even at
the hourly hyper-speeds I have read that some players perform at
(like 1000 HPH), even if one played continously 24/7, it is over a
years play.
While I was thinking about that, I thought maybe there should be a
Guiness(sp?) record for continuous hours of VP play. Of course,
there would have to be conditions, at least some sort of bathroom
break. I know I wouldn't set any record; my eyes get tired after two
or three hours of continuous play.

Dunbar's Risk Analyzer for Video Poker can simulate 100 million
hands. On my 5-yr-old Dell laptop (Latitude D600), a 100-million
hand sim takes 84 seconds. However, DRA-VP does not count how many
royal flushes were hit.
You could get an idea of the distribution of possible 100 million
hand "session" results by doing 100 trials. That would take about 2
hours 20 minutes. A newer computer would probably cut the time in
half.
