Jumbo Jackpots

PRESS RELEASE

The Jumbo Jackpot at
Sunset Station is now over $143,000!

Must hit by $150,000, play with your Boarding Pass Card to win!

The Jumbo Jackpot at
Fiesta Rancho is now over $120,000!

Must hit by $150,000, play with your Amigo Card to win!

Does anyone have information as to what causes the jackpot to
increase, and/or how the winner is selected? Is the probability of
winning dependent upon which game is being played, and/or the
denomination?

Seems as if it "might be" worthwhile to go to Sunset Station, and
play single coin on two nickel machines on an otherwise-poor game, to
maximize probability of winning jackpot.

Is such information publicly available, and/or required to be filed
with the Gaming Commission?

I wondered about that too. If the odds of winning are the same at
any machine, and any denomination ... 100 of us could sign a
share agreement, go in a caravan, and play VP one nickel a game until
someone wins!

Worth considering, but unclear whether practical. Altho I haven't
actually counted, I suspect that the number of machines in a given
casino is closer to 1000 than 100. Moreover, especially when value
is approaching the "must hit" number, it is by no means certain that
the RATE of increase remains constant.

Even so, it would appear that a specific inquiry, to the Gaming
Control Commission, would be in order.

I just sent following email to exsec@ngc.nv.gov. Best I could
determine, the most-appropriate point of contact with Gaming
Control. As at least implied, I am WELL familar with procedures for
sending registered letters via "snail mail" . .

Others might see fit to send similar communications, perhaps posting
a copy on VPFREE.

Station Casinos (including Fiesta Henderson/Rancho) have been
advertising these for some time; with emphasis upon the fact that
they "must hit" upon attaining a value of $150,000.

All that the publicity actually SAYS is that any player whose slot
club card is inserted in a gaming device "might" win a Jackpot.

Does the Gaming Commission regulate such promotions? More
specifically, does it require that operators of such disclose:

A. The percentage of "coin in", at all eligible machines, which is
added to such Jackpots.
B. Whether, as such Jackpot closely approaches the "must hit" value,
the aforementioned percentage remains constant.
C. The algorithm by which the Jackpot winner is determined.

I do hope to receive a meaningful response, by 1800 PDT Tue 4/26.

Just FYI, beginning April 11 Atlantis casino in Reno became the first
Northern Nevada casino to offer a "Jumbo Jackpot" promotion (see
their web site info below). Sadly for us VP players, they
discontinued their generous Card of the Day offer at the same time
(which used to pay multiple bonuses when quads were hit on multi-play
machines).

From Atlantis web site:

Instant Fortune Jackpot!
Simply play your favorite slot machine while using your Club Paradise
card and get ready to win! Any bet on any denomination slot Machine
could instantly win you the Instant Fortune Jackpot, Atlantis'
exclusive progressive slot jackpot, with no winning hand or

is GUARANTEED to hit by $150,000.

If your information is accurate, it would appear that there is quite
a bit of scope for "insider" chicanery. If the required dollar total
has been predetermined, anyone who knows the value could obtain a
significant and unfair advantage.

A more-secure approach, consistent with the "must hit by" condition,
would be to gradually increase the probability of any given play's
winning the jackpot. As the total closely approached the "must hit"
value, the probability would approach, and eventually reach, 100%.
There would still be a certain amount of exposure to chicanery, but
it would be materially reduced.

As mentioned, I've sent an inquiry to the Gaming Commission; to date,
no meaningful response.

I got an ad the other day from Thunder Valley Casino, and in it, they offered bonuses if you hit the jackpot and were playing higher denominations $1 and above ($50,000 bonus) and if you were playing between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. (or some early morning hours) a bonus of $50,000.

I believe the one that Atlantis in Reno just started said you have a better chance of hitting it if you are playing more coins.

While gambling at Santa Fe Stations casino I often would meet a fellow who comes out every 3 months from back east. He had become close friends with a coworker at Sun Life Canada who subsequently became the computer analyst for Stations Casinos. (He would come to Las Vegas to gamble and visit his friend).

His friend told him that each time you hit the deal button you are assigned a block of numbers. If the winning number is contained within the block of numbers you win the jackpot. If you don't win those block of number are removed so there are fewer numbers left in the pool. The jackpot increases while at the same time the pool of numbers decreases. This process continues- the jackpot increases and the probability of winning gets higher and higher as the pool of numbers gets smaller and smaller.

Any idea if the total number of "assigned numbers" on a deal is based on the
amount of coin-in?

What you describe would appear to be a basically-fair approach. The
more so if the "win or not" decision isn't made until after the
numbers are assigned (as opposed advance determination of the winning
number).

The only unanswered question would be whether every button push--as
opposed to every penny of coin-in--has an equal probablity of
winning. That would materially affect the best choice of games as
jackpot closely approached the "must hit" value; fairness would
appear to require that it be publicly-available information.

Thanks for this explanation, which sounds like a pretty fair method
to use, and may answer a question I mentioned early ... whether a
person playing a dollar machine has a greater chance of winning than
someone playing a nickel machine. Using the method you described the
person playing the dollar machine may be assigned a larger block of
numbers than the nickel player ... giving the dollar player a
proportionally greater chance of getting a winning number. For
example, a nickel player playing 1 nickel may get only 1 number
whereas a dollar player playing 5 dollars would get 100 different
numbers.
