John Grochowski CCT Column - 5 SEP 2006

From John G's Column:

On 8-5 Jacks or Better, the payoff on coins Nos. 1-4 is
only 96.06 percent. But on the fifth coin alone, we get back 102.26
percent, raising the overall return on the machine to 97.3 percent."

How do you get 102.26% return on a 8/5 Jacks or Better game?

John states that the ER is 97.3%--that's for an 8/5 JOB game. (By the way, you can get a quick approximation of the ER for JOB games by subtracting 1.1% from the 9/6 JOB game for each short-coin in the Full-House or Flush categories. Here there's a total of two short-coins--one for the Full-House and another for the Flush. 99.5-2.2=97.3%, the ER John gave.)

Instead of paying 250 for each coin bet for the Royal Flush--that's usually what you get if you play 1-4 coins--you'll receive 800 for each coin bet on a Royal Flush by betting max coins. Make sure you read the payout table carefully, sometimes the max bet is more than 5 coins--it may or may not require an increased bet to receive the 800/1 Royal return. Also, I know of a bank of 9/6 JOB dollar machines that pays 800 for each coin bet on all Royals--including short-coin bets.

The return is even higher with a progressive Royal--however, as John points out, max bet is required.

I can't believe that I misread the "on the fifth coin alone"
qualifier. Yes, in the same sentence he does say that the over-all ER
is 97.3%. I overlooked that too.

That's interesting. The implication seems to be that most of the
usual variation in the payoffs is in these two categories. And that
they more or less contribute equally (to the tune of 1.1%) to the EV.
So a 6/5 JoB (a bank of which sat next to a bank of 9/6 JoB's at
Caesars in AC - see #65284) has an EV of ~95.1

In what other "regular business" would you find such a business
practice?

BTW, while writing this, I have been constantly going back and forth
to "Video Poker Help" at http://videopoker.fws1.com/index.html

That site has a wealth of information, probably known to most people
here.
