Is VP Doing a Lousy Job of Marketing?

I went to the Fashion Show mall this afternoon. First, let me
recommend the Christmas fashion show (Wed-Sun, @ 2,4,6,8). It really
isn't a "fashion" show, although it does include 10 beautiful dancing
girls and Santa. I won't spoil it by telling you what happens, but
it's fun. It is a multi-media extravaganza. Only in Las Vegas.

In the center of the mall is a kiosk by a business called "We Do It
All! Vegas". They sell an array of gambling related items ...
playing cards, dice, poker chips, etc. and many books on gambling.
There are dozens of Texas Hold-Em books, CD's, charts, etc. for
sale! It's amazing to see. I asked if there were any Video Poker
books. She said no books but managed to dig out one BDPWP disk
hidden between two books! Surely more people play VP than Texas Hold-
Em. I mean, they even had books on how to play slot machines. Do
you have to read a book to learn how to play slots? It seems to me
that VP is seriously hurting marketing-wise. Maybe VP needs its own
TV game show where experts answer penalty card quizzes, or a reality
series where the VP playing contestants that go bust first get tossed
in the Bellagio pool, and the winner gets a bit part in the next
Casino episode and a guided tour of the IGT factory.

One final comment. That business I mentioned has a web site
(www.wedoitallvegas.com). I found two VP items: BDPWP and a CD
called Video Poker Strategy Pro (out of stock). Is that something
new? It was described as a full motion video and multimedia sounds
CD where you learn Lenny Frome's strategy for 60 VP games.

no, texas hold'em is the new big thing ever since they started
televising the tournaments
a lot of the action is online also, bypassing the casinos
many players bet all or almost all hands, anyone with a clue about
poker would know that's a losing strategy
meanwhile slot supervisors have noticed the dropoff in play, their
response? tighten the paytables, which of course will reduce play even
more, even bad players soon learn their play money isn't lasting as
long as it used to
result: gamblers gravitate to texas hold'em where they figure they at
least have a chance of winning

Video Poker Strategy Pro is software put out by Masque
(www.masque.com) with the help of Lenny Frome in about 1997/1998.
It was the companion software to the 2nd edition of Winning
Strategies for Video Poker, as it played the same 60+ version of VP.

Brumar:

I think the marketing problem for VP stems from the fact
that it is not a simple game to just pick up and play.
There is more to it than slots and holdem and it is
intimidating to most amateur players.

That Frome software has been around for quite a while. It opened my eyes to
video poker strategy years ago, but BDWP and Frugal offer so much more.
