Going to LV next week and decided to try some full pay Loose Deuces. I have practiced on software for 10,241 hands and have not gotten the deuces. Is this a normal expectation? I believe they may be expected every 4,200 (apx) or so. Went thru several thousand bet units, and by the way, no royals (expected). Is this the result of the variance of around 70? Another way to express this it's expected that 89% of those who have played such an extended session would hit the deuces at least once.
Failing to hit makes it exceptional, but hardly abnormal.
(That "exception" is roughly comparable to the exception of hitting 5 or more sets of deuces over that period ... yet experience leads me to believe in my gut that I'm much more likely to fall among the former group

For those who doubt there is "another side of the coin", let me relate a recent deuces wild experience.
During a recent trip to Laughlin, playing full pay deuces at the Colorado Belle, my wife had three sets of deuces in about three hours of play one afternoon. We returned the following day, played three more hours, and she had three more sets of deuces.
Then, at Harrah's that evening, playing the triple line "pseudo" NSU deuces, having been dealt three deuces, she completed one set of deuces. Finally, a few minutes later, she was dealt the four deuces!
That's 10 sets of deuces in about 6 hours of single line play, plus an hour and a half of triple line. Her total hands played would have been around 7500, so that's a set of deuces every 750 hands.
As I stated at the outset, there is "another side of the coin".

Under the two assumptions:
(1) The RNG is "flat", meaning, "any card is as likely as any other card", and (2) Optimum play:
The probability of hitting 4 deuces at least once in X hands played may be (and has been) computed. Or turning the computation around, the value of X can be determined setting the value of P(4 deuces).
This does NOT mean that if you play X hands, you will get your deuces. It means if you play a VERY LARGE number of sets of X hands, the number of 4 deuces achieved will form a probability distribution function with a mean and a variance, like any other probability distribution.
If the variance is wide, it is not surprising if the number of 4 deuces achieved departs (in either direction) radically from the mean, in any ONE trial of X hands played.
Many years ago, when they still paid jackpots in cash, I was at the Golden Nugget in Laughlin playing 25 cents FPDW. It was early on a weekday morning, and the machines were largely unoccupied. I hit 4 deuces on one machine, and while waiting to be paid, moved over and hit 4 deuces on another machine, then moved over and hit 4 deuces on a third machine!
But I've also gone for many 8-hour days without getting them.
Both experiences are "normal" in the sense that they are doing their part in filling out the probability distribution. I didn't say they were "usual".

I agree -- when people say "set of deuces" in reference to video poker they are using the word "set" in its everyday sense meaning a collection or group of things, and not in the formal poker sense.
