Recently I posted that Congress is debating a ban on internet gaming by
making it illegal for credit card companies to process charges with out
of country gambling operations. Someone responded that online gaming
is not a federal crime, only a state crime. Is this true? Yesterday,
an NPR commentator discussed the recent arrest of the CEO of a Costa
Rica gaming site (and 7-8 others) as he changed planes in Dallas. He
was traveling from London to Costa Rica with a Dallas stopover. I'm
pretty sure the commentator said there were federal laws against online
gambling.
Is Online Gambling Illegal?
<<I'm pretty sure the commentator said there were federal laws against
online gambling.>>
Only against sports betting.

The operative language of the Wire Act refers to "in the business of
gambling." This can be applied to wagers on anything. Sports is not
mentioned in the Wire Act.
